Gutted Alex Jones presents The One Show alone while Matt Baker self-isolates

Alex Jones was forced to present The One Show alone tonight while Matt Baker self-isolates.

At the start of tonight's show, which was pushed back to 7.15pm because of a BBC news bulletin, Alex announced that Matt was working from home like many in the UK.

Gutted Alex had more bad news as she explained the table was missing after being broken by Paddy McGuinness last week.

The One Show studio looked very bare as Alex sat alone on her green sofa, but she joined by comedian Russell Kane, who wiped his coffee mug with a anti-bacterial wipe.

Alex explained: "As you can see…look. The sofa is empty. No Matt Baker. Like so many of you he is working from home today."

Matt was able to speak to Alex via a live video feed – and revealed she had been replaced by Bob the dog.

The presenter said: "Yes I'm at home. This is my Alex Jones tonight [Bob the dog] and probably for the next two weeks.

"This afternoon we got a phone call. Four of us in our household and one of us has a cough. So that means we are following the Prime Minister's advice and spending the next two weeks self-isolating."

"Speaking to people over the last few days, we expected this to come, and feel as ready as we can do.

"More than happy to do our bit, do what's right for everybody and look after one another."

The One Show tweeted: "Tonight @missalexjones will be holding down the fort as Matt Baker is now self-isolating due to symptoms in his household. But don't worry Bakerettes, we can still hear from him!"

Viewers took to Twitter to praise Matt for presenting The One Show from home.

One fan said: "Really nice to see Matt Baker presenting television from his own home"

"Matt Baker presenting #TheOneShow from his sofa with a dog on his lap is the loveliest portent of societal apocalypse we could have hoped for," added another.

A third said: "Thought Matt Baker and his dog would be interviewing remotely for a second"

Alex admitted she was gutted Matt was not with her but pleased they were putting him to good use at home.

She then revealed that their usual coffee table was missing after Paddy McGuinness broke a piece off on last Wednesday's show.

Alex explained: "Also missing is our coffee table. It's not working from home but it's broken. It needs fixing after Paddy McGuinness got hold of it last Wednesday night."

Comedian Russell, who stayed safe by wiping his tea mug with an anti-bacterial wipe, was in the middle of a UK tour but has been forced to cancel.

Russell said: "I was getting ready for a show last night at 5pm and by 6pm my diary was completely emppty.

"This is my last job until May. This is my violin playing on the Titanic as I go down.

"I’m more scared for my family and people who have to live with me. I’ve got so much energy. I don’t know what I’m going to do."

"Obviously I’m in a privileged position but when you’re self-employed the work stops like that, zero income coming in, particularly for stand ups."
