Holly Willoughby defended by This Morning fans as she cries over Ukraine story

This Morning fans rushed to defend presenter Holly Willoughby after she shed a tear on air whilst discussing the conflict in Ukraine during Tuesday's episode of the ITV show.

Their guest, Coronation Street actor Nicola Thorp, was also listening in as LBC’s Julia Hartley-Brewer spoke about the conflict over video link.

The segment focussed on an 11-year-old Ukrainian boy who had to travel 600 miles alone while his home country is attacked by Russian soldiers.

Holly couldn’t hold back the tears as they shared his story and the 41-year-old sat next to her co-host as she was told that the child had travelled across a continent by himself.

Schofield and Willoughby were told that he “doesn’t know when he will see his family again” or when he will “return to his homeland”.

Phillip had previously told viewers that the boy had made his way to the Slovakian border with nothing but a plastic bag, his passport and a phone number written across his hand.

The story became too much for Holly as she listened to the harrowing reality of the child’s journey.

As the segment came to an end, she dabbed her eyes with a tissue and took a deep breath, visibly upset by what she had just heard.

Phillip could be seen turning to comfort his friend after he concluded the story as the programme cut to a commercial break.

As the show came back on air the topic changed to Martin Lewis’ money saving advice but viewers could still see a distraught Holly trying to keep her composure.

Fans turned to Twitter to defend Holly from doubters and called for someone to “give her a hug”.

One fan clapped back: “Holly is a mother, she has a very good heart. A lot of you are bringing up the fact she has money so she should house Ukrainians, for f**** sake, grow up. She has feelings, whether you're a fan or not, you're still watching This Morning aren't you.”

Another spoke out: “I take the p*** out of Phil and Holly all the time, but I do genuinely believe that the stories they have to report on play on their minds. They get a lot of stick for showing emotion.”
