Hollywood Newcomer Dylan Flashner Shares the Fairytale Story of How He Was Discovered

Iconic Hollywood idol James Dean and newcomer Dylan Flashner have one thing in common. Both heartthrobs were discovered because they were in the right place at the right time.

Dean was an extra in a Pepsi-Cola commercial. A producer saw Dean’s smooth moves and smoldering good looks and signed him to appear in a television special. The rest is history. But that was the 1950s, long before Instagram influencers and YouTube became career launchers.

And while actor/musician Dylan Flashner is emerging in an environment where going viral can equate to a Hollywood contract, Flashner was discovered the old fashioned way, almost exactly like James Dean.

He appeared in the background of a music video and a producer noticed him. Flashner was given a contract for a television show and his body of work exploded. He recently appeared in the indie film Farewell Amor. Flashner also has two projects in post-production and one in production. He plans to return to shooting The Card Counter, alongside actors Willem Dafoe and Tiffany Haddish.

Dylan Flashner is a musician who appeared in a music video

Flashner told Showbiz Cheat Sheet his first love is music. He got into acting when he appeared in a music video and was discovered. “How I got into acting was interesting,” he mused. “I was in a music video and a producer for television happened to be on the set and asked me if I wanted to be involved with [acting].”

He said while he was flattered he wasn’t sure if the remark was going to result in additional work. “But the next thing you know an email came in with a script and the main character’s name was Dylan,” he said.

The producer was casting a pilot for That One Time, a series about, “four teenagers from a small Texas town come face-to-face with their own consciences after a tragic accident.” The show also starred actor Dermot Mulroney as Flashner’s father. The series wasn’t picked up after the first episode, but Flashner went on to be cast in five new projects.

Flashner says the show was a gateway to additional work

“Ironically we did the show, That One Time, and it hasn’t been picked up yet,” he said. “But it led into all of these projects. I’ve got about 12 or 13 of them coming up by the end of the year hopefully. So it’s cool how that [came together].”

He jokes about how his discovery story feels very storybook. “I’m waiting for the epic fall,” he laughed. “But hopefully none of that happens. It’s cool to see when you put your head down, sometimes things like that happen like that. And you never really believe it happens until it happens to you.”

Flashner says the music video he appeared in, featured two unreleased songs. He’s since integrated the video into his acting reel.

Beyond acting, Flashner also is dropping his first EP, which he hopes will be released this summer. “I’m hoping by the end of August,” he said. “I’m really excited with some key features from some artists people will definitely know.” He adds that he’s been working on the album for about two years. “It’s been a dream of mine,” he remarked.
