Too Close will air on ITV tonight (April 12) and the psychological mini-series is full of dark twists. The story follows Connie (played by Denise Gough) and her relationship with her forensic psychiatrist Emma Robertson (Emily Watson). Actress Gough spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk and other media about her extensive transformation.
How did Too Close’s Denise Gough get into character?
Fans would have already caught a glimpse of Connie in images and the trailer for the thriller series.
She is first seen covered in cuts and bruises, with her hair cut short, and she looks dishevelled.
Flashbacks then reveal the old Connie, before she committed a heinous crime she claims to have forgotten.
Fans will be keen to find out how Connie got to where she is in the present day, following the harrowing images.
The actress opened up about her experience in the make-up department, and how she prepared for her role.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk and other media, she said: “It was three and a half hours.
“It’s not just a make-up job, you become a team going on this journey together. What they did was phenomenal.
“You get to see people operating at the top of their game, it was so fantastic. My job was to sit there and let them do it.
“It was hard work that part of it, but the result is so worth it that you just feel…now when I read a script I think ‘well, how long am I in the chair for’.
“By the end, I was ripping things off my body, I had learned to withstand the pain. It was quite an experience.”
A huge amount of work went into creating Connie’s present-day look, which is worlds apart from the person she used to be.
In the first episode, fans will gain insight into Connie’s family history and the pivotal relationships she creates.
She is introduced to her new psychiatrist and immediately intimidates and belittles her.
Connie is trying to get a dark secret out of Emma, just as much as Emma wants the truth from Connie.
Gough also opened up about the emotional impacts of playing such a complex character.

When asked whether it was hard to switch off from such roles, she said: “I love it, I get energised.
“I do find it easier on stage because…the audience breaks the spell.
I’m finding that doing this kind of stuff on screen I just have to be a little more… I don’t know. It’s about taking care of yourself.
“I just love it, I get so much from playing women who go through those things so I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
She is mostly known for her roles in theatre, so the world of TV is a different ballgame.
She added: “I don’t find myself collapsing in my life when I play a part like that. I feel fantastic depending on the kind of energy of the woman I guess.
“This woman is a little more fragile in points so I was feeling a little bit fragile in my life I guess, but I’m used to it now.”
Too Close is a three-part drama based on the novel of the same name published under the pseudonym Natalie Daniels.
Throughout each episode, viewers will see how Connie manages to break down Emma’s defences.
The line between protagonist and antagonist has definitely been blurred in this highly-anticipated series.
Too Close starts on ITV on April 12.
