This Is Us is known for its devastatingly emotional scenes. A lot of that credit should go to Sterling K. Brown. It’s not surprising why he has won awards for his role given his work on the show.
This year he is nominated again for an Emmy for his performance as Randall Pearson. Find out how this win could add him to another short winner list.
Sterling K. Brown previously won an Emmy for This Is Us
Brown’s career has only been getting better. He previously won an Emmy as a supporting actor in a limited series for American Crime Story. He then moved into a leading role by playing Randall Pearson on This Is Us.
It didn’t take long for his work to get recognized on the family show. He was nominated for lead actor in a drama series the first time in 2017 and won.
This was a big deal given it had been 19 years since a Black man won in that category. Now that Brown is up again he could be added to another short list of Black winners.

Brown is nominated again for his This Is Us role this year. This is after fans watched Randall and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson)’s marriage take a hit while he was running for local office. The upcoming season will hopefully show the couple where we left off with them working on their marriage.
Brown is up against his co-star, Milo Ventimilgia, Billy Porter for Pose, Jason Batemen for Ozark, Kit Harington for Game of Thrones, and Bob Odenkirk for Better Call Saul.
According to Gold Derby, if Brown wins again he would be the third Black actor to win two Emmys as a lead. The first to achieve this was Bill Cosby for his role on I Spy in 1966, 1967, and 1968.
Then there was Andre Braugher who won as a lead actor in a drama series for Homicide: Life on the Street in 1993. He later won for his role in the miniseries, Thief in 2006.
Brown acknowledged Braugher in his acceptance speech. “It is my supreme honor to follow in your footsteps,” he said according to Variety. “The 19 years since another African-American actor has won and been recognized in this category, that meant something to me.”

Things got pretty meta after Brown’s win. Brown guest starred playing Philip Davidson on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and shared a scene with Braugher.
In the episode, “The Box,” Captain Ray Holt and Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) interrogate Philip. The scene paid homage to Homicide: Life on the Street.
There are still multiple things standing in Brown’s way of winning this year. The other actors in his category are pretty strong including Ventimiglia and Porter.
However, Brown has won before and the Emmys has a history of rewarding actors multiple times for the same roles. The Emmy Awards air on Sunday, Sept. 22 on Fox starting at 8 p.m. EST.
