Health Secretary Sajid Javid was praised by Richard Madeley for giving a “clear answer” on coronavirus case numbers and hospitalisations after he stated the link between the two was “weakened, but not broken”. But the niceties ended there as Mr Madeley accused the Government of peddling “confusing” advice after Prime Minister Boris Johnson delivered a gung-ho press conference promoting the July 19 reopening date whereas his chief advisors, Chris Whitty, and Patrick Vallance, appeared less than enthusiastic. Mr Madeley wondered if Mr Javid was “embarrassed” at the display during a tense clash.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Mr Javid was asked about case numbers rising in the UK and Chief Scientific Advisor “sighing” when he revealed it during a government press conference.
Mr Javid said the restrictions were not being lifted too early and that the country has to live with Covid.
The Tory Frontbencher said the Government is pushing ahead with the July 19 reopening date because the link between cases and hospitalisations has weakened – therefore decreasing the severity of the disease.
But Mr Madeley was not impressed and said: “Well that’s a very clear answer but you can understand why there’s been confusion across the country this morning.
“It is shown in our responses from our viewers that half of them think this is a good idea and the other half think it is a terrible idea.
“And is that not embarrassing yesterday that your Prime Minister stood in the middle and made the statement that you endorse.
“And then straightaway, either side of him, his two principal advisors over the last 18 months radiated disapproval.
“It was obvious to anybody who understands body or actual language that they disagreed with this.”
Mr Madley concluded by asking if Mr Javid agreed it was confusing to the public that government and its advisors seem to be at disagreements over July 19.
Mr Javid said: “I have to say I don’t agree with your description of the Prime Minister’s press conference, I wasn’t there.
“I was making a statement at the exact same time on the issue but I did see it afterwards.
“In terms of Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance, they agree with the easing plan we announced because we follow the data and listen carefully to what the scientists have to say.
“Ultimately we need to make a decision as ministers and I can also respect there are some people who say we are not moving fast enough and others are going to be a lot more cautious…
“We need to make a balanced decision.”
