Jeremy Vines Channel 5 show slapped with more than 2,200 Ofcom complaints

Channel 5's hit current affair show, which is headed up by Jeremy Vine has been slapped with a staggering 2,250 Ofcom complaints.

The complaints issued to the regulator followed on from a broadcast that centred around a discussion about the junior doctors’ pay dispute and subsequent strikes.

Ofcom have said that they are no considering whether or not they will launch an investigation into the episode, which aired on March 13.

In the episode which aired earlier this month, host Jeremy invited Lin Mei and associate editor of the Daily Mirror Kevin Maguire to discuss the junior doctors' strike action over pay.

Lin, who is a broadcaster on the Channel 5 show and GB News, was asked her thoughts on whether or not doctors deserve a 35% pay rise.

Speaking on the show, she said: "We need doctors and I don’t think the job of being a doctor is as attractive anymore so I do agree they need a pay rise, but 35% is a stretch.

"Essentially like [Jeremy] said, being a doctor is like being in other fields, a graduate, an apprentice.

"Now the average for a graduate is £25,000, so they’re still getting more than the average graduate."

Jeremy then argued that junior doctors are beginning their careers "loaded with debt" as a result of university fees.

Lin then explained that "we need to incentivise them more" by paying for the training fees or expenses, but urged that a 35% pay rise is not "achievable or doable".

Daily Mirror's Kevin then joined in when he said that the junior doctors have worked "really hard" at university, but noted a "huge retention problem" once they start their careers.

He said that it's a "waste of them, it’s a waste of public resources and time and it impacts on our health".

Many viewers took to social media at the time, with 2,250 people taking it one step further by filing a complaint to Ofcom.

On Wednesday, March 22, Ofcom issued a statement about the overwhelming amount of complaints, which read: "We are assessing the complaints against our broadcasting rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate."
