KATE Garraway enjoyed a bittersweet trip to see a magic show that her husband had booked to take the kids to before his Covid battle.
The 54-year-old star revealed that the family were heading to watch the performance on the fateful day in March 2020 when Derek was rushed to hospital.
He remained in intensive care for over a year after the disease "ravaged" his body – and though he was able to return home in April of this year, he is still incredibly unwell.
But Kate decided that her children deserved a treat, and took them out to the theatre for the first time amid their dad's heartbreaking battle.
The star shared a photo of herself sat next to 15-year-old Darcey, and 12-year-old Billy in the stalls, with all three wearing protective face coverings.
The TV favourite explained in the post's caption: "Well this was a moment – the first time the kids & I have been out to 'something' other than school or work since Derek got sick.
It was so wonderful to see Darcey and Billy enthralled and mystified and enraptured – the magic of life returning.
"It was a magic show we were supposed to be heading to when he was rushed into hospital – and we felt strange that we were going out to one when he isn’t ready to – YET.
"But it was so wonderful to see Darcey and Billy enthralled and mystified and enraptured – the magic of life returning. And I know that’s what Derek wants too."
Kate went on to admit that it was uncomfortable to be back in the hustle and bustle of London life, but she ended up feeling emotional while watching the spellbinding performance.
She shared: "It was unnerving to be with so many people after so long and the kids were wide eyed and more than a little disorientated to be in the centre of London with all the buzz but excited too.
"I couldn’t believe my eyes welled up at the spirit and celebration and pure joy of the performers getting the chance to entertain again – magic back in the west end and in our lives ????."
Earlier this month, Kate updated Good Morning Britain viewers on how Derek is getting on at home, explaining: "He's very up and down, we're certainly a long way out of the woods.
"Being at home we have seen some things improve; having family around, the children around has provided stimulation.
"The problem is, you latch onto the positives – which is good because you have to."
Kate went on: "There's absolutely no doubt that he has huge challenges ahead."
