Kate Garraway, 53, welcomed cameras into her family’s garden for the latest instalment of Gardeners’ World, showing what she and her children had been working on during lockdown. Explaining why she had been growing a variety of plants, fruit and vegetables, the journalist said their growth gave her some positive indication her husband Derek, 53, would be able to overcome his ordeal with coronavirus. With the presenter’s spouse having been put into a coma and only regaining a minimal level of conciseness after finally testing negative for COVID-19, viewers were left crying at how brave the mother-of-two was being in the face of such sadness.

Taking to Twitter after watching the interview, one wrote: “In tears watching this piece about Kate Garraway #GardenersWorld.”

Another added: “I’m in b***** tears on a Friday night @kategarraway. No one should have to go through this! Love and hugs #GardenersWorld.”

Whilst a third commented: “Kate Garraway on #GardenersWorld brings a tear to my eye. What an amazing woman and what bravery. I so hope her husband comes through.”

“This is a tough watch. Totally understand why they turned to growing things. It gives an element of control in a world where there is little control #shoutyhalfhour #GardenersWorld,” a fourth remarked.

A fifth posted: “Such a moving and inspiring interview with @kategarraway Something in my eye #GardenersWorld.”
