Kate Garraway opened up about celebrating husband Derek Draper’s ‘challenging’ birthday as she returned to Good Morning Britain, after a few days off.
The ITV presenter has had a tough few months, after her husband, 53, was diagnosed with coronavirus at the end of March.
He has been fighting for his life in a coma ever since, with the 53-year-old revealing the illness had ‘wreaked havoc’ on his body.
Appearing on the latest instalment of GMB, she told Adil Ray about commemorating his birthday on Saturday, alongside their two children, William and Darcey.
‘It was Derek’s birthday on Saturday as well, which was obviously a challenging one under the circumstances,’ she began.
‘We managed to FaceTime him and sing happy birthday, we had a cake which we had on FaceTime.
‘It’s very challenging, they’re [the kids] are doing brilliantly with it though. We just thought for us, we did it with Derek’s family as well, we managed to hook up technically and sing happy birthday. We just hope the love seeps through.
Kate also insisted that her days off had nothing to do with Derek’s recovery, as she had simply switched days with co-star Charlotte Hawkins.
Explaining that concerned fans had got in touch to check if she was okay, she added: ‘Thanks to Charlotte for swapping with me.’
Viewers were thrilled to have the I’m A Celebrity star back on their screens after the absence, flocking to Twitter to praise her return.
‘Great to see the beautiful lovely @kategarraway back xxx,’ one commented.
‘Everytime l hear Kate speak about her husband and family she is always so thankful and humble,’ another penned.
‘Kate always thinks of others who have lost and suffered throughout COVID. [heart] you.’
While a follower agreed: ‘Oh lovely to have Kate back this morning a great presenter.
‘Professional, brave, kind and an all round ray of sunshine even during this dreadful time personally.’
Derek has been battling coronavirus for months, and was rushed into hospital at the end of March for treatment.
He was moved into a coma just days later, and started opening his eyes last month.
Kate recently confirmed that he is out of the ‘deep’ coma, and is now in a ‘minimal state of consciousness’.
