The Last Kingdom is now in its fourth season on Netflix and the producers have just announced season five is in the making. The end of season four saw Aelswith (played by Eliza Butterworth) make contact with her grandson Aethelstan (Casper Griffiths). She handed her grandson to Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) to take care of and fans are wondering whether they will be reunited again in season five. Butterworth spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about their relationship.

Will Aelswith be reunited with Aethelstan?

Fans saw a change in Aelswith’s character in the fourth season as she started to see the error of her ways.

Following the death of her husband Alfred (David Dawson), she started to realise how alone she was feeling.

In order to set things right, she invited Aethelstan’s mother, Ecgwynn (Julia Brown) to see him as they had been separated.

Aethelstan ended up being held captive by the Viking warlord Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurðarson) along with Aelswith.

During the time they were being held in Winchester, Aelswith taught Aethelstan about Alfred’s legacy.

However, while they were being held hostage, Aethelhelm (Adrian Schiller) wanted to get rid of Aelswith once and for all, and he poisoned her.

Fans are still waiting to see if Aelswith survives, and she had to hand over her grandson to Uhtred so he could raise him and keep him safe.

Butterworth spoke to Express.co.uk about her character’s future with Aethelstan.

She said: “One of Lady Aelswith’s main motivations throughout the show is her devotion to her late husband King Alfred and the pursuit of fulfilling his vision to create a united land called England.

“Her newly found grandson Aethelstan represents the ongoing legacy and dream which Alfred spent his reign trying to achieve.

“With the presence of Aethelstan, Aelswith can help secure Alfred’s bloodline on the throne of Wessex.

“The relationship between Lady Aelswith and her grandson has blossomed and become tender throughout the show which has revealed Aelswith’s sensitivity and empathy.

“She feels regret over the way Aethelstan was separated from her son King Edward and his mother Ecgwynn and now vows to keep the boy protected and to give him a royal future.”

Fans are hoping Aelswith survives so she can witness her grandson succeed Edward, or at least watch him grow into a strong contender.

Aethelstan only played a small part in season four, but he is likely to be one of the main characters in season five.

Carnival Films teased some of the season five plot when they announced the series renewal.

They said: “Charged with training King Edward’s first-born son Aethelstan as a warrior, Uhtred’s ambition will have an even higher purpose.

“But to achieve this destiny, Uhtred will have to face down his greatest enemy and suffer his greatest loss.”

Uhtred is likely to help unite England as one kingdom as he has remained loyal to Aelswith and her daughter Aethelflaed (Millie Brady).

With this in mind, he should return to Winchester at some stage, with Aethelstan at his side.
