MasterChef: John Torode and Gregg Wallace speak out on huge show shake-up

John Torode and Gregg Wallace have returned with a brand new series of MasterChef as they welcome 60 contestants into the kitchen over the new few weeks. Monday’s instalment saw the first six contestants battle it out to impress the judges and make it through to the quarter-finals and BBC viewers were treated to one major shake-up.

The first round saw all six contestants cook a signature dish where Karen and Dev impressed John and Gregg the most.

Next up the remaining four hopeful chefs took part in the brand new Three Ingredient Challenge.

The challenge involves the contestants having to whip up a winning dish with three ingredients as the focus of the dish alongside a pantry of spices and vegetables.

In Monday’s instalment Becky, Teddy, Pete and Amanda were given sea bream, fennel and a selection of tomatoes with Pete and Teddy impressing the judges the most.

Ahead of MasterChef’s return, John and Gregg spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about why they introduced the new challenge.

John explained: “I suppose what it does it makes them focus on those three ingredients as being the centrepiece of the dish.”

“At least there’s an inspiration,” he added. “I think with food you need a little bit of prompt as to what to cook.

“If you wander around a supermarket aimlessly, you don’t know what to do.

“[But] if you’ve got three ingredients in front of you, focus your mind on exactly the task on hand, and that’s exactly what we wanted to do.”

Each series John and Gregg have the tough role of whittling down the hopeful contestants for the quarter-finals.

The MasterChef duo were asked if there are any standout qualities they look for in prospective chefs.

John revealed: “One of the big things you’re looking out for is confidence and any kind of skill they have.

“If they know how to handle a whisk, handle a frying pan, confident in what they’re doing now, yeah of course.”

Gregg joked: “Early stages of the competition all we want is something we can eat.”

He added: “Yeah it’s nerve-racking wondering what it is you’re going to be forced to taste on the early rounds most certainly.”

John remarked: “You go to a town hall and there are six people you’ve never met before and they’re going to cook you lunch.”
