After an emotional eight weeks, Love Island concluded on Monday. While the islanders were undoubtedly feeling somewhat overwhelmed, they weren’t the only ones struggling with their feelings. Host Maya Jama has revealed she held back tears during the final and “couldn’t look” at one of the finalists.
The presenter crowned Kai and Sanam the winners of the romance focused reality show.
Later, summing them up, she said: “I love, love, love Kai and Sanam as a couple.
“They’re so sweet together, and you can tell they really love being in each other’s company.
“When Sanam came in she felt like a perfect fit for Kai.
“You can see just how much of a warm heart she has,” she continued.
“I could barely look her in the eye after she accidentally said she was in love with Kai during the final – she almost set me off – but that’s when I knew there was something real.
“They bring out a genuine side in one another,” she said.
The incident Maya was referring to happened during the couple’s final interview when Sanam accidentally slipped up and declared she was in love.
“Obviously he’s an attractive guy. Apart from the looks, I feel in love,” she told the host.
When she realised what she had admitted, her eyes widened and she clapped her hand to her mouth.
However, this emotional moment didn’t make Maya’s favourites as she reflected on her highlights.
She confessed she “couldn’t hide my emotions” during the dramatic recoupling, as she shared: “The recoupling at Casa actually shocked me.

“I wasn’t expecting the outcome especially when Tanya walked in with Martin.”
She also selected Movie Night as one of her favourite moments of the series for being “wild, shocking, and completely filled with drama”.
Following the events of Movie Night, the show was hit with accusations of broadcasting toxic femininity after male contestants were reduced to tears.
Runners up to Kai and Sanam on Monday night were Lana Jenkins and Ron Hall, while Tom Clare and Samie Elishi finished third.
Shaq Muhammad and Tanya Manhenga received the least number of votes from the public and came fourth.
Shockingly favourites Will and Jess didn’t make it to the final with their elimination being announced prematurely.
In an advert for the Aftersun spin-off show, aired just minutes ahead of the verdict Maya let slip that the couple had been sent home throwing viewers into a tailspin.
Love Island is available to catch up on ITVX.
