Channel 4 viewers were rooting for Moneybags contestant Michelle to take home a huge jackpot of £159,000 on Tuesday’s episode of the quiz show. Despite making it into the final, Michelle selected the incorrect answer to the first question of the all-important round. Host Craig Charles had to deliver the crushing blow to Michelle that she would be going home with nothing, which left her devastated.

Michelle, a mature student from Cheshire, reached the Moneybags final where she had the chance to win a total of £159,000.

Speaking ahead of the first question in the final, Craig said: “Michelle, £159,000 has been split across four moneybags of increasing value.

“You now face four questions in order to take home the lot.

“For each question, you’ll have a choice of three bags, one is correct and contains some of your money, the other is wrong and contains a bankrupt so you’re out of the game.

If Michelle guessed the correct bag on question one it would contain £15,900, while the correct bag on question two would take her up to £31,800.

If she chose the correct bag on question three she’d get £79,500, and if Michelle got all four questions right she’d go home with an astonishing £159,000.

For the first question, Michelle had to guess which advertising slogan was being used before 1990.

The options were, L’Oreal’s ‘Because you’re worth it’, and Maybelline’s ‘Maybe she’s born with it’.

Michelle picked up the Maybelline money bag, and Craig asked her why she made that particular choice.

She replied: “I’m actually not sure at all. I actually think it could have been either.

Craig interjected: “Oh no, don’t say that.”

Michelle continued: “Now I’m thinking that it was probably L’Oreal. I just don’t know.”

Craig looked worried and said: “If you’re wrong, you’ll be bankrupt.”

Unfortunately, Craig had to break the news to Michelle she’d selected the incorrect answer as L’Oreal had been using its slogan since the 1970s.

He added: “Sadly you are bankrupt and leave the game with nothing.

“Michelle I am so sorry, lets hear it for Michelle.”

A downtrodden Michelle went home empty-handed but was given a huge round of applause by her fellow contenders.

During the show, the contestants go head to head answering questions by grabbing moneybags from a conveyor belt in front of them.

Each correct answer moneybag has a cash value – anything from £1,000 to £100,000 – which the contestant will bank if they choose correctly.

But if they grab an incorrect answer moneybag, the player is frozen out of the next question and they have to move to last position on the money belt behind their rivals.

In each show’s final, the player who has banked the most will get to play for their total jackpot.

Moneybags continues weekdays at 3pm on Channel 4 and streams on All 4.
