Mrs Brown’s Boys creator Brendan O’Carroll rules out ‘woke’ series despite his grandson’s fears for the planet – The Sun

THE BBC may be increasingly woke – but you will not see Mrs Brown’s Boys jumping on the bandwagon.

Brendan O’Carroll, who writes and stars in the BBC1 sitcom as the formidable Irish mammy, has told how he slapped down his ten-year-old grandson and co-star Jamie O’Carroll when he pleaded with him to use the show to raise concern about the planet.

In an exclusive interview, Brendan said: “He cornered me in my dressing room and said ‘Grandad, I need to talk to you about the environment and how your generation are not doing enough.

“I wrote it in a script where somebody said to Mrs Brown, ‘Your generation has f***** up this planet’.

“But it never made an episode, as I thought, ‘No, it’s too serious’.”

Brendan also has issues with Jamie’s eco-claims.

The veteran actor believes his generation did more for the planet than his children’s generation, who are now in their thirties and forties.

He explains: “Our generation were doing it right, it’s the disposable generation who are ruining the planet.

“Everything is disposable now, even furniture.

“We had a couch all our lives, they change their couch now like they change their wallpaper.

“We recycled bottles and washed out nappies.

“We had the right idea back then.”

He makes a good point.

Charlotte has a ball with stars

CHARLOTTE Crosby swings into 2020 on top of a wrecking ball as she takes part in tonight’s Big Fat Quiz Of The Decade.

The reality star’s Miley Cyrus stunt on the Channel 4 show is a clue for the celebrity panellists who must cast their minds back to news events, pop culture and internet videos over the last ten years.

Host Jimmy Carr is joined by guests including Claudia Winkleman, Joe Lycett, Alan Carr, Jonathan Ross and Stacey Solomon who larks around with a paper bag on her head.

The big questions include: Why was lasagna big news in 2013?

Beats me, that.

Rory was a Major problem

RORY Bremner sparked a Whitehall investigation after prank-calling MPs in 1993 pretending to be the then Prime Minister, Jonh Major, it has emerged.

Officials feared the comedian was so good at impersonating Sir John that the Chancellor at the time, Ken Clarke, might have believed it was the PM and revealed details of the Budget – which could have toppled the Government.

Speaking on podcast Media Masters, Channel 4’s former chief executive, Michael Grade, revealed he got a call from the Cabinet Secretary expressing fear about the prank for then Channel 4 show Rory Bremner, Who Else?

Bremner claims Sir John found it funny but ordered a hunt for the impersonator.

He said: “They had to find out because John Major said, ‘Well, this is very funny but it could get quite serious’. So there was this hunt going on.”

Judge joy for Lisa

CORONATION Street’s Lisa George has admitted she is relieved that Jason Gardiner is not on the panel for Dancing On Ice.

The actress, who plays Beth Tinker in the ITV soap, was no fan of his harsh criticism and thinks new judge John Barrowman will be nicer.

She said: “I would have been really nervous about being criticised by Jason.

“I didn’t like that kind of judging.

“I like constructive criticism. I hope John is not too acerbic.”

We will have to wait and see if there is a Mr Nasty this year.

Wossy reckons his masks will terrify Cowell

AFTER disastrous X Factor ratings, Jonathan Ross reckons Simon Cowell will be jealous of his new ITV talent show, The Masked Singer.

Wossy appears on an all-star judging panel alongside Rita Ora, Davina McCall and US actor Ken Jeong.

The wacky series, which kicks off on Saturday, sees the judges try to guess the identity of singing celebrities who are hidden in spectacular outfits, ranging from a bumblebee and unicorn, to giant duck.

Jonathan said: “Simon Cowell will think this is a great format. He’ll think, ‘I wish I had that format’.

“I know he felt that way about The Voice. Cowell is a smart man so when there’s something good on TV, he’ll think how he can improve his own shows.

“Unfortunately, this idea is taken, Simon. It’s already huge in America.”

Wossy is hoping the show will cheer people up a little after taking down their Christmas trees.

He said: “January is a depressing time of the year, it’s just after Christmas and people are going back to work, so having something fun and colourful, great escapism, will be ideal.”

Asked if the series could even go on to replace The X Factor, Davina said: “The Masked Singer could be broadcast anywhere in the year, it’s not seasonal – but I don’t think The X Factor is going anywhere.”

Get Sande to dance

SHE was a guest performer on the last series of Strictly Come Dancing – and now Emeli Sande fancies becoming a contestant when it returns later this year.

The singer, whose debut album Our Version Of Events was one of the biggest records of the last decade, said when asked about competing on the BBC1 show: “I would love to, that would be incredible. But I’d embarrass myself. I love to dance but can’t learn choreography. ”

On whether she had been approached by Strictly bosses, she said: “No, I think they probably see my inability.

"When you have to learn the steps and remember them, I’d find that a bit too challenging.”

Now they know she’s interested, the Strictly booker better get on the phone.
