NCIS is one of the longest-running scripted shows on primetime television. The show first dropped on September 23, 2003, and has been going strong ever since. It’s amassed well over 300 episodes, 16 (incredible) seasons, and has seen a pretty expansive cast of characters. Oh, and let’s not overlook the THREE Primetime Emmy nominations the show has received over the years.
Writing for a series that’s 16 years old isn’t easy. Characters come and go, and some even change up their look, feel, and personality! Sometimes fans welcome the changes, other times they rally against the man — demanding their beloved characters and storylines back.
What is ‘NCIS’ about?
So here’s the lowdown on NCIS. The show was initially created as a spin-off of another popular show, JAG. NCIS follows the journey of a group of agents who call the Naval Criminal Investigative Service home. Led by Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) the agents find themselves facing all kinds of predicaments.
While it’s a crime drama at its core, the series has no shortage of heart or humor. The writers manage to keep each episode fun and fresh, even with the repetitive nature of the drama. The show has been so successful that is has spawned two major spin-offs: NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans.
Being in the top 10 of the longest-running shows, the writers are clearly doing something right when it comes to NCIS. Something that keeps fans coming back to their couches to watch it every week.
First ‘NCIS’ fans missed Ziva
Cote de Pablo’s Ziva was one of the most beloved characters on the show during her time on the air. Fans couldn’t wait to see what hijinks she would get into. Plus her inter-personal relationships tugged at the heartstrings. But then something tragic happened.
During Season 11, Ziva was hiding out in Israel after a terrorist attack. She then decided she would remain in her home country instead of returning to work as a special agent.
Fans were able to stomach things. Perhaps their beloved Ziva would come back. Well, by the end of Season 13 Ziva was believed to be annihilated thanks to a mortar attack. The attack wasn’t shown to fans; it was just referenced by the other characters later on.
To say fans were devastated would be an understatement. They took to social media to get their beloved agent back, but after finding out why de Pablo left, it was hard to really request her return.
Those fans will get their wish, though. Ziva will be back for at least two episodes later this season.
This is the other character fans wish they could have back on ‘NCIS’
To be fair, this character hasn’t left the show — her purpose, demeanor, and descriptors have changed. Ellie Bishop was introduced as an NSA analyst when she first stepped foot on the show. She would flex her cool analyst skills, winning points for the women on the show.
Considering why de Pablo left, having strong, smart, and independent women on the show is a great thing.
If you could change one thing about the show, what would it be?
“For ellie to still be able to show all the cool analyst skills she used when she was first introduced in the show.” – Reddit user diz445
Sadly, somewhere in the midst of it all, Bishop really declined as a character. Now she’s just described as a regular agent. Despite the demotion, fans can’t get enough of the quirky character and wish with all their heart that Bishop had more screentime.
Perhaps the writers will hear their cry and grant them the old Bishop they know and love.
