Netflix’s Bridgerton branded ‘new Gossip Girl’ as scandalous trailer is released

Netflix production Bridgerton is set to promise plenty of drama following the bombshell release of its trailer.

The drama created by Shonda Rhimes teased its arrival on social media yesterday, instantly sending fans over the edge as they eagerly anticipate its official release on Christmas Day.

During the clip, Dame Julie Andrews sets pulses racing as she says: "You don't know me dear reader and you never shall.

"But be forewarned dear reader, I certainly know you… Let it be known if there is a scandal I shall uncover it and share every last detail."

Starring Derry Girl actress Nicola Coughlan, Tracy Beaker's Ruth Gemmell, Dame Julie Andrews and Luke Newton – the show focuses on Daphne Bridgerton as she debuts on London's marriage market.

Despite there being a long line of bachelors for her to choose from, her brother soon puts a stop to a potential relationship for most men.

His decision soon sees the society scandal sheet written by the mystifying Lady Whistledown cast aspersions on Daphne, played by Pheobe Dynevor.

Soon, Daphne finds herself head over heels with the handsome Duke of Hastings – eventually becoming engaged.

Since the trailer dropped yesterday, fans couldn't help but notice the similarities between the drama and American based hit, Gossip Girl – which follows a group of singletons.

Viewers instantly took to social media to share their excitement.

With one tweeting: "It's giving period Gossip Girl it has production values and the cast is hot I'm at least taking a peek."

A second went on to say: "Gossip Girl but make it a period piece… I'M SO HERE FOR THIS."

"There's a period piece version of Gossip Girl? YAS," exclaimed a third.

A fourth added: "Look guys, it's 'Gossip Girl' but 100 years before the OG."

Bridgerton lands on Netflix on Christmas Day.
