New ITV drama No Return begins on Monday evening starring Sheridan Smith as Kathy Powell, a mother whose holiday is thrown into chaos when her son faces police charges for assaulting another boy. Writer Danny Brocklehurst has explained the inspiration behind the drama and how he had Sheridan in mind for the role.
Speaking to Express.co.uk and other press, Danny explained: “It all started in a casual way in that I was on a walk.
“I was chatting away to a friend, and they told me something that’s very different to this, but it was about something that had happened to a member of their extended family abroad.
“And he sort of sent me off thinking about families, and I’m a parent of two boys, and you know, they’re getting to a certain age now.
“My eldest is nearly 15, and I still feel like I’m the protector, but you kind of have to sort of let them go a little bit as well.

“So, the more I thought about it, the more I just thought there’s a really interesting story here about a crime that happens abroad.”
Danny continued: “We might be able to do something really powerful about how a family, a mother, in particular, would respond if their son was accused of something abroad.
“They couldn’t get them out of the foreign system that they don’t understand.
“So we felt fairly confident that we had something quite strong and mainstream and universal.”
Touching on casting Sheridan and writing the script with her in mind for the role, Danny revealed: “I always write everything with Sheridan in mind, she knows that!
“No, I mean, it’s funny because I don’t really write with actors in mind as such, so what I tend to do is just write with, like, the character in mind, or perhaps a real person who’s inspired me.
“And then what we very quickly do is start to draw who would be ideal to play this part kind of list, and you know, Sheridan was obviously the person who we wanted to play the part.
“To my absolute amazement and delight, she wanted to play the part which, you know, isn’t always the case, so we got the person we wanted.”
Kathy and her husband Martin (played by Michael Jibson) are looking forward to a fun, relaxing family holiday with their two children, Noah (Louis Ashbourne) and Jessica (Lily Sutcliffe).
They’re off to Turkey to enjoy the sun, sea and sand and spend some much-needed family time together.
However, their dream holiday soon turns into a nightmare when Noah accepts an invitation to a beach party.
Events start to unfold, and the family is left fighting for their son’s freedom against a foreign legal system and the shadow of media coverage.
Danny spoke about how proud of the show he was and said: “I’m really proud of this piece. It’s been a passion piece is the word go.
“I think we’ve actually pulled off a really wonderful for parter that I think has something important to say, and he’s very, very moving in the end.
“Hopefully, you know, hopefully, people enjoy that ride and take something quite powerful from it, you know, as a viewing experience.”
The ITV Drama is a four-part series that will be available to watch on ITV Hub and Britbox after the first episode premieres tonight.
No Return starts tonight at 9pm on ITV.
