LIAM Payne sent One Direction fans into a frenzy last week when he told me the group were talking about marking their tenth anniversary with a special project.
But after days of rumours including the possibility of new music, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
I am told Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Liam are still in the very early stages of discussions about how they could celebrate the milestone and that a full reunion is extremely unlikely.
Music insiders predict they will do something small for the anniversary on July 23, such as release a montage of clips from their time as a group.
A source close to the boys said: “They are back in touch but talks between them are only about something small to mark the anniversary.
“They all have their own music ongoing so a reunion right now just wouldn’t make sense.
"Harry, Niall and Louis have postponed tours which they will need to complete.
"A reunion with all five members is a wonderful idea but in practice these things take a long time to arrange and it doesn’t seem feasible at the moment.
"And with the continued threat of coronavirus, it is unlikely they will be able to get together for the anniversary.”
Liam, who has just released his new song Midnight with Alesso, sparked talk of a comeback by chatting about 1D in this column.
He said: “We’ve got a ten-year anniversary coming up so we’ve all been speaking together a lot over the last few weeks.
“There’s a number of different things that we’re trying to make happen.”
Since then, all of the members have refollowed Zayn on Twitter, five years after he quit the group.
For now, that might be the closest we get to a reunion.

- LITTLE Mix's Jade Thirlwall has big plans for when lockdown finally ends. The Break Up Song singer said she will head out for an Indian meal when she is allowed to, before adding: “I need a Toby Carvery. I’m gasping for one of them, truth be told. That will be me.” She’s a girl after my own heart.
- Rapper Tory Lanez has released a highly anticipated new album, The New Toronto 3, which includes songs Who Needs Love, Do The Most and Broke In A Minute. The move comes after the rapper has been pulling in huge audiences for his Instagram Live show “Quarantine Radio”.
- Charli XCX says being in lockdown has improved her relationship with boyfriend Huck Kwong. She told Apple Music’s The Candy Shop: “Pre-quarantine, there was a lot of physical but also emotional distance between us. And this time has brought us so close together.”
- Matt Lucas is creating a laugh-out-loud picture book inspired by his charity song Thank You, Baked Potato for release on May 4. It will offer guidance on avoiding coronavirus and give tips for self-isolation fun to raise money for Feed NHS, a charity providing meals for our critical care workers.
Sweet taste of hits
UP-and-coming star Saweetie is winning over an army of followers – with big names including Beyonce among her fans.
The US rapper has had hits with Icy and My Type, which between them have racked up 174million views on YouTube, and is dating hip-hop heavyweight Quavo from Migos. She also went to Kim Kardashian's Christmas party.
On attending the bash, where she hung out with Kanye West, Elon Musk and Travis Scott, she said: “That was very intimate, it was for family and friends.
“Quavo is a friend of Kanye’s and it was really nice to be there with a lot of private and powerful people.”
And after a string of huge tracks, the singer is preparing to release a lot more in the coming months. She told me: “I have so much new music and I can’t wait to perform it.
“It’s definitely going to be a lengthy project – longer than what my typical project has been. It will include ten or more songs.”

DEMI Lovato said she may scrap one of her singles as it brings back bad memories.
The US singer said she would “probably never perform” the unnamed hit again, because of “what happened during my overdose” in 2018.
Jesy's fond of blonde
JESY Nelson has succeeded in getting ex-boyfriend Chris Hughes out of her hair – by putting on a blonde wig.
The normally brunette Little Mix singer looked incredible in this snap shared on Instagram days after she ended things with the former Love Island star following more than a year together.
On the group’s 2016 hit Hair, she sang: “Cause he was just a d**k and I knew it, got me going mad sitting in this chair.
“Like I don’t care, gotta get him out my hair.”
Here’s hoping those lyrics don’t reflect what’s gone on with her because it certainly wouldn’t paint Chris in a good light.

RISING British star Declan McKenna has recruited his doppelganger – Black Mirror actor Alex Lawther – to star in the video of his new single, The Key To Life On Earth, out today.
Declan said: “We made it just in time.”
Losing his head
ROBBIE Williams is clearly incredibly bored in lockdown, resorting to reciting the lyrics to his No1 song Candy while dressed in a chainmail hood.
His wife AYDA posted the odd clip on her Instagram account with the caption: “Guess who watched Gladiator last night?”
Isolation is doing strange things to Robbie.
About time he visited his home studio.
Heads I Lews
LEWIS Capaldi is the coolest guy going but it doesn’t mean his mum can’t cramp his style.
The singer has had to turn down drinks with some big-name stars in the past to get a lift home with her.
Lewis said: “We’ve had some celebs come to gigs in the UK. They’re like, ‘Let’s go for a beer, man’.
"And I’m like, ‘I would love that but my mother is taking me home so I have to leave with her at once’.”
It’s a valid excuse to swerve a pint.
