Amanda Owen, 46, talked about how “fate” led her to the career choice as she appeared on Channel 4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch. Channel 5’s Our Yorkshire Farm star explained how and when she decided she wanted to work on a farm and the strange way in which it eventually happened.
Amanda described how she, her husband Clive, along with their nine children ended up on Ravenseat Farm.
“It was reading the James Herriot books which first set me off on this idea that I wanted to be a shepherd,” Amanda said.
James was a famous veterinary surgeon and author, who practiced in Yorkshire for almost 50 years.
Just last year, Channel 5 aired a series based on his life, All Creatures Great and Small.
Amanda continued: “And a way down the line, I find myself living at Ravenseat, which actually is a place that James Herriot actually visited.
“So it feels like fate in a way. It feels like I’ve gone full circle and of course here I am, writing my own books as well now and doing TV.”
Reflecting on her career, she asked: “Who’d have thought it? I mean they say the truth is stranger than fiction.”
“Yes, I think it is, isn’t it?” Host Steph McGovern replied.
Amanda runs Ravenseat, one of the most remote farms in the country, alongside her husband Clive, 56.
The couple is raising their nine children on the farm with a unique lifestyle documented in the series, which is now on its fifth series.
And Amanda owes some of the TV show’s success to Ben Fogle.
It was in 2015 when the family appeared on Ben Fogle’s series New Lives in The Wild UK.
Her appearance in the single episode is what led to their own series, Our Yorkshire Farm, which follows the highs and lows experienced on the Yorkshire Dales farm.
Since then, Amanda has gone onto write four books: The Yorkshire Shepherdess (2015), A Year in the Life of the Yorkshire Shepherdess (2017), Adventures of the Yorkshire Shepherdess (2019) and Tales from the Farm (2021).
As well as presenting cookery and lifestyle segments on ITV’s This Morning.
Amanda and her family’s popularity has built up a tremendous following and has 171.4k followers on her Twitter account with followers wanting to know the latest from the farm.
Amanda has already updated her fans today by posting a video of her daughter Clemmy sitting on a horse while feeding chickens.
One fan commented: “What a way to feed the hens sitting on Tony like the Queen throwing her crumbs out.”
Another wrote: “She is clearly living her best life,” while a third said: “Way to go clemmy.”
“Such a wonderful start to the day,” a fourth penned.
Our Yorkshire Farm is available to stream on My5.
