Starz’s historical drama followed the life of Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe), a time-travelling nurse as she embarked on a life-altering journey between the 18th and 20th centuries. As she found herself in the past she came across the John ‘Black Jack’ Randall (Tobias Menzies) and fans spotted the huge error with him in season one of Outlander.
Claire and Black Jack Randall first crossed paths in season one after she unintentionally travelled to the past, thanks to some mysterious stones.
She had mistaken him for her husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) and after realising her mistake, the sadistic character attempted to rape her as she tried to run away.
However, this wasn’t the first time she had heard of him as he was her husband’s ancestor. Earlier in the series, Frank was looking into his family tree and became obsessed with finding out more about Black Jack Randall.
However, Claire would later learn that he was not someone to be admired but instead an evil man who used rape and assault to overpower people.
This was seen later on in season one when the sadistic villain brutally raped Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) when he was locked up for a crime he didn’t commit.
As a character who was violent and greatly feared throughout the series, gum was a key prop used and it was synonymous with his kind.
However, this was where fans spotted the major historical blunder with Black Jack Randall and his gum.
In the season one episode titled The Garrison Commander, Claire was having an unexpected meeting with a British General, when Black Jack Randall shockingly burst into the room.
According to Screenrant.com, as the villain entered he was seen to be chewing on gum and it was made evident after he removed dust from a fireplace.
Although chewing gum and evil characters go hand in hand it would’ve been impossible for him to get his hand on a piece as they were yet to be discovered.
Chewing gum first started amongst Native American tribes and became popular with English settlers in 1848, so it was very unlikely to have reached Scotland during the 1700s.
In the episode, Black Jack Randall and Claire were left alone in the room where he apologised for their first encounter and claimed: “The mere memory leaves me ashamed.”
However, he did so to manipulate her in an attempt to find out more about her and where she came from.
When Claire tried to escape his grasp in the earlier episode she claimed that her husband Frank Beauchamp was expecting her.
By this episode, Black Jack Randall had become aware, a man with that name didn’t exist in the area.
When he revealed the truth in her lie, she made up another story and claimed to have followed a lover to Scotland.
In season three, the twisted villain Black Jack Randall met his demise during the Battle of Culloden, at the hands of Highlander Jamie – who by then was also Claire’s husband.
Outlander is the on-screen adaption of a series of best-selling novels written by Diana Gabaldon.
