Outlander has been running for five seasons now, with season six just around the corner for fans. Starz just made the announcement filming for season sixth has finally wrapped after a number of delays. But how many episodes of season six will there be?
How many episodes are there in season six?
Outlander fans have been waiting patiently for the new season after it suffered a series of delays.
The new season, which still doesn’t have an official air date, was held back from completing its shoot several times due to current coronavirus restrictions.
However, fans can rejoice as the shoot is now complete and the show is heading into post-production.
The stop and start film shoot has slightly impacted the length of the season, with season six set to receive eight episodes.
Starz confirmed the season length with season six being significantly shorter than the usual 12 to 13 episodes per season.
Series showrunner, Matthew B. Roberts recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the season’s hectic shoot and the series moving to the editing stage.
He said: “We are excited to get into the editing room to work on bringing the fans one step closer to reuniting with the family back on Fraser’s Ridge.
“Filming in 2021 has presented an unprecedented set of challenges which led us to the decision to truncate the season in order to bring the fans the most vibrant and dynamic season as soon as possible.”
Outlander, like any other series in production throughout 2020 and 2021, has had to deal with restrictions on filming put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This has ultimately led to countless shows being delayed, and Outlander is no different with the show missing its traditional summer slot.
The show doesn’t have an official release date for season six, however, Starz confirmed they are aiming to premiere season six in early 2022.
The official Outlander Twitter page made the announcement filming had wrapped on June 1 during World Outlander Day celebrations.
The post also shared several stills for the new season, confirming series stars Claire Randall (played by Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) will both be back again.
The returning cast also includes Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton), Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) and Young Ian (John Bell).
The new season will also be bringing with it some new faces including Malva Christie (Jessica Reynolds).
Also joining is her father Tom Christie (Mark Lewis-Jones) and brother Allan (Alexander Vlashos).
Starz has also confirmed season six will not be the last outing for the Outlander team, with season seven already in the planning stages.
Due to the change in schedule, the earliest fans can expect season seven is late-2022, with mid-2023 being more likely.
Fans were quick to share their excitement of season six, with many of them replying to the official update on the Outlander Twitter account.
One fan said: “I’m SO SO excited for more Frasers in my life! But maybe you could spare a hint about how early in 2022 we’re talking?”
Another fan added: “This is great but 7 months to edit 8 episodes?”
A third fan shared: “Congratulations to the whole cast and crew for making season 6 possible despite the difficult circumstances! Very excited for our favourite characters’ story in this new season, and the one to come!”
Outlander is available to watch on Starz and Amazon Prime Video.
