Season five of Outlander is coming to screens next month and is being billed as the most dramatic run of the show to date. Fans are champing at the bit after the release date was pushed back by US network Starz. But the Droughtlander – the phrase coined for the time Outlander is offscreen – is almost at an end now.
The new series will see Lord John Grey (played by David Berry) have a big role to play in the new series as the American Revolutionary War fast approaches.
Lord John will find himself in a difficult position with his love for the Frasers on one side and serving the British crown on the other.
With Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) ordered to form a militia and hunt down his beloved godfather Murtagh Fraser (Duncan Lacroix), Lord John will have to also follow through on this and make sure it happens.
Lord John has remained a faithful friend to Jamie since they became acquainted at Ardsmuir Prison back in season three of Outlander.

He even fostered Jamie’s secret son William Ransom (Oliver Finnegan) and cares for the young boy as his own.
Lord John married Isobel Dunsany (Tanya Reynolds) as well and together they raised William.
The pair seemed happy enough together and it felt like a marriage of convenience considering Lord John is gay and has previously professed his love for Jamie.
But some are wondering what happened to Isobel and why she’s no longer part of the series inspired by the novels of Diana Gabaldon.
What happened to Lord John Grey’s wife Isobel Dunsany?
After the Frasers arrived in the New World, they soon met with Lord John and William who had also planned to settle in America.
Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) was less than impressed to see Lord John, accusing him of following her husband half way across the world.
Lord John informed her Isobel had died while she was travelling over from England.
In the books, Isobel died of the bloody flux on the ship over with her adoptive son William.
After this, Isobel doesn’t appear in the Outlander novels but she does turn up in Gabaldon’s Lord John series.
The books focusing on Lord John give an insight into Isobel’s character as she mourns the death of her elder sister Geneva (Hannah James).
But there’s nothing stopping Isobel from returning to Outlander in a flashback or through time travel which is possibly within this world.
Also, if the Lord John series makes it to the small screen, it would give scope for the character to make a comeback.
