Outlander season five hinted Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe) could return to the present at some point. However, author Diana Gabaldon has also dropped a huge hint indicating Claire and Jamie Fraser’s (Sam Heughan) story will end together. Here’s everything fans need to know about this theory.

Will Claire Fraser die in the past?

Time travel has always been an essential part of Outlander from the moment Claire ended up in 1743.

However, after she returned again to the past in season three, fans have been wondering whether she will ever leave this era again.

This is of course complicated by the fact Jamie cannot time travel and is instead stuck in the 18th century.

As a result, there has been a lot of speculation over the past few seasons about whether Claire will stay in the past permanently now.

As viewers will know even in the season five finale, Jamie teased Claire would have to return before the American Revolutionary War.

So far the author of the book series Diana Gabaldon has not given a huge amount away.

However, fans have noticed one tease about the date, which could indicate Claire’s fate on the show.

Back in 2015, Gabaldon revealed what date she plans to end her book series on.

She told The Outlandish Companion: “I think the Outlander books will end in about 1800 in Scotland. If this tells you anything, more power to you.”

This reveals some major things about the end of Jamie and Claire’s story including they will travel back to Scotland and, perhaps more importantly, the books will stay in the past until the very end.

Speculating about this, some fans have also revealed it could be proof of a happy ending.

Posting on Good Reads, fan Mishelle LaBrash wrote: “Echo [An Echo in the Bone] is based in 1776, in which I believe Claire to be almost 60.

“Now I’m not a mathematician, but that would make Claire in her 80s when the story ends.

“Leaving me to believe that they will grow old together, and die in the past.”

Another fan named Kelly added: “Yes my ideal is that Jamie and Claire die together at a very old age.”

“Jamie and Claire HAVE to die together in old age,” a third called Eva S weighed in.

“I cannot imagine what Diana has in store for us, but I know it will be incredible.”

This all points to a potential happy ending for the beloved duo.

Not much else is known about the planned ending but Gabaldon has previously revealed she will end it on Jamie’s ghost.
