Ozark season 4 is highly anticipated following the nailbiting end to season 3, and fans were left wondering whether Ben Davis (played by Tom Pelphrey) was really dead. Viewers were shocked to learn Wendy (Laura Linney) ordered her own brother to be killed as he was getting in the way of their money-laundering operation. Whilst some fans believe he really is dead, others think he may still be alive and acting as an informant for the FBI.

Is Ben Davis an informant for the FBI?

Viewers were first introduced to Ben in season three when he was working as a supply teacher at a school.

He ended up being fired from his job as he suffered from bipolar disorder, which made him lash out at his class and assault a school worker.

Ben then travelled to The Ozarks to visit his sister and the rest of the Byrde family and, as the visit was unexpected, they had no choice but to let him stay.

Wendy grew more and more frustrated with her brother as, due to his impulsive and unpredictable nature, he almost ruined their operation on a number of occasions.

Not wanting to take the risk any longer, and wanting to show their loyalty to the Navarro cartel, Wendy ordered for Ben to be killed.

Fans did not see Ben’s body and only saw Wendy’s husband Marty (Jason Bateman), disposing of some ashes.

As viewers did not actually see a body, there are a number of theories which suggest Ben is still alive and could return for season four.

Some feel Wendy and her family played a trick on the Navarro cartel and know Ben is still alive, but are making the cartel believe he was killed.

Others believe Ben may be in custody with the FBI, with cartel assassin and hitman Nelson (Nelson Bonilla) acting as an informant.

However, a new theory has come to light suggesting Ben’s character may have an even bigger purpose in the next season.

Some fans believe Ben is actually working as an informant for the FBI, or he is being used for negotiation.

One fan said on Reddit: “This is important to consider as well, because it seems like he’s already served his purpose in the show and could certainly be killed off.

“He comes in and everybody begins to like him before he shows his crazy side and tears apart relationships before being killed dramatically and turning family against family.

“With that said, Jonah is now primed to take over the role of bipolar brother, which was hinted at by Wendy mentioning Ben’s bipolar not showing until he was older.

“And Jonah has always been a little off with the dead animal and gun fascination and eagerness to help his parents launder money at 13-years-old and his crazy turn of emotions at the end.

“However, Ben could be alive and still serving some purpose- as a negotiation tool or a tool to keep the Byrde’s in check for the Navarro, negotiation tool or informant for the FBI, or Jonah’s bipolar tag team buddy.”

Some fans think writers of the series purposely left Ben’s fate open as his character was so popular, and there is a chance he could be written back in.

Viewers already believe Nelson is an informant with the FBI so there is a chance they could also be bringing Ben on side, as he has not always had the best relationship with his family.

Another fan said: “The only conceivable thing I could think of after watching it is that Nelson was FBI all along.

“Agent Petty was obviously a nutjob, and it would make sense for the cartel to send a guy out to keep tabs on him- and if Nelson was FBI, then he wouldn’t mess around with Petty, who ends up dead anyway.

“It would also explain why he would kill the therapist, she wouldn’t shut up and would’ve blown the Cartel’s spot up, which would inhibit his ability to act under the cartel AND the FBI.”

Other theories suggest Marty made a deal with Navarro to let Ben live, whilst leaving Wendy totally unaware, for the safety of their family.

Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner) was the only other person to see the body bag, so there could have been another body inside the whole time.

Marty wanted to dispose of the body quickly and was not interested in waiting for Wendy, so he may have swapped the bodies before Wendy found out.

Fans will have to wait and see whether Ben was captured by the Navarro cartel to be used to their advantage later down the line, or whether the Byrde family tricked the cartel and kept him safe.

Pelphrey has spoken out in interviews about how much he enjoyed working with Linney, so the decision to cut him from the series is likely to be a narrative one.
