Paddy McGuinness wife Christine tells of relationship strain ‘we don’t have quality time’

Andrea and the other Loose Women panellists were joined by Christine McGuinness in the studio who opened about her family life and what it is like when your child is diagnosed with autism. Christine also spoke about her relationship with TV star Paddy McGuinness and how his work commitments and her being a mother to three small children has affected the amount of time they spend together.

Christine and Paddy McGuinness recently went public to discuss their youngest daughter Felicity’s autism diagnosis and how it had affected their family.

The mum of three spoke about the difficulties they as a family have faced and continue to face, but also wants to raise awareness of the condition.

Christine previously admitted she had seen similar signs in their youngest child, but the couple confirmed this week she also has autisim.

The mum told the Loose Women about how challenging their family dynamic is upon her marriage to the Top Gear presenter: “We’ve had one lunch together this year. We don’t do dates, we don’t do date nights.”

She continued: “We just don’t have quality time. We’ve just accepted that’s how it is. We are carers.”

“My husband works a lot. He’s on Top Gear now so he’s flying all over the world.

“And I will try and make my work time when he’s at home because it’s sort of the only chance I get.

“That’s just how it is. We see each other a lot, we live together so we see each other far too often actually.

“It’s the quality time that we miss we don’t get that and we’ve just accepted that that’s how it is.”

Andrea asked: “Some people at home might say, ‘but why is she relieved with the diagnosis?’”

Christine replied: “I think it’s because I understand it more now. So the first time around with the twins a couple of years ago it was quite a big shock.

“We were heartbroken because we didn’t know anything about autism, all we knew was that our children had a lifelong condition, and that there was no cure.

“What’s common is delayed speech or being non-verbal, which all three children had.

“Really sensitive to noise, to sound, to texture, to smells. I always get told off that my perfume is too strong.”

Christine then read out a poem that she recently posted on Instagram to reveal that Felicity had been diagnosed.

She said: “I am so proud to be your mummy, you are everything to me.

“All three of you are thriving with ASD [Autistic Spectrum Disorder]. I will never try and change you, you are perfect as you are.

“Mummy is going to change the world to understand her superstars. You are sensitive, you are strong, and you have such a special bond.

“You are funny and talented, cheeky and sweet, you all love your toys to be kept extra neat.
