Phillip Schofield has opened up about the emotional state he was left in when After Life season 3 came to an end, revealing how he broke down in tears.

Earlier this month, the final episodes of Ricky Gervais’ critically-acclaimed Netflix comedy-drama were released, continuing the tale of Tony Johnson in the aftermath of his wife’s death.

One character that pulled at the heartstrings the most throughout the show was Brandy the Dog, the pet that Tony shared with his late wife who provides him with the company and comfort that he needs.

On Thursday’s edition of This Morning, Anti, who plays Brandy, made an appearance in the ITV studio, joined by her owners Ash Foster and Beth Heale.

After hearing about how the German Shepherd bonded with Ricky ahead of filming, meeting with The Office star for the first time on Hampstead Heath, Phillip shared the impact After Life has had on his own family.

He revealed that he and his family are watching it at the same time, sharing their reactions in a message group.

‘We’re watching it as a family and we’ve got our group, and it was my eldest daughter who said, “Oh my god, we’ve just finished series three and we’re in bits,”’ he said.

‘Her and her boyfriend Will they’re absolutely in bits. They were I think one show ahead of me, and I got to the end of it and I posted this picture on our group. That’s me at the end of After Life.’

The 59-year-old then shared a picture on the screen featuring a close-up of his face, his cheeks looking red after clearly having a cry over the tear-jerking ending.

‘It was actually Brandy, Anti, that did a lot of that to me. It’s a stunning series to be in, it’s absolutely beautiful,’ he added.

Several This Morning viewers shared their admiration for Anti, with one tweeting: ‘Anti is adorable. She’s the real star of After Life and proves animals can be far more intelligent than us humans!’

‘Love After Life but far too early in the day to be blubbering into my cornflakes,’ another wrote.

Ricky recently shared his gratitude over the incredible response After Life has received, writing: ‘Woke up to literally thousands of the most beautiful tweets about #AfterLife3.

‘Genuinely overwhelmed. Trying to read them all. Thank you. Have a great day.’

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
