A government minister shut down her interview with Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on today's Good Morning Britain.
In the tense chat, Coffey denied claims from the presenters that the government was not prepared for the coronavirus pandemic.
She said: "There'll be a variety of reasons for why people have unfortunately died due to this, some of that will be recognising the age of the population. Some of it will be recognising the obesity of our population.
"But we've been learning throughout of how we can improve the different ways of helping people through this."
Susanna said: "That's the first time we've heard a government minister settle on a couple of explanations".
Piers remarked: "So you've given us two now, ageing population and obesity.
"So are you now saying that the reason for us having the worst death rate in the world is the public? They're too old and they're too fat?"
The minster claimed Piers' remark was "very insulting".
Later, Piers asked: "What did you find insulting? You said two reasons."
She replied frostily: "I've got to point out you started late, I've got other interviews as well, I wish we had more time".
Piers didn't hold back as he shot back: "I haven't interviewed you since May, it was you who boycotted us, so don't play the card of you haven't been given enough time.
"We gave you eight months and you didn't turn up."
Coffey stated: "Thanks Piers, this was due to start at 8.15, I'm sorry but I'm going to have to go".
Morgan said: "You're going to go? You're not going to stay and explain why you think I was the one who was being insulting?"
"I've given you twenty minutes of my time, I appreciate your time, I'm going to go, goodbye", Therese exclaimed before swiftly hanging up the call.
