Power Book III: Raising Kanan has transported Power Universe fans back to the ’90s. The drama series is the origin story of the villainous Kanan Stark (Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson). However, in the TV show, we meet Kanan in the years before he becomes a menacing gangster. 15-year old Kanan (Mekai Curtis) is just beginning to make the choices that will shape his life.
In addition to getting to known Kanan in his teen years, we are also introduced to his mother, Raquel “Raq” Thomas’ (Patina Miller) who runs her drug empire with her brothers Marvin (London Brown) and Lou Lou (Malcolm Mays).
Now fans believe they know why Kanan named his only son Shawn.
What happened to Shawn in ‘Power’?
Shawn was one of the very first main characters to die on Power. He was introduced in the Power Universe as Kanan’s 20-something-year-old son who Ghost (Omari Hardwick) had taken under his wing amid Kanan’s imprisonment. Shawn was Ghost’s driver since the drug kingpin didn’t want him involved in his illegal business.
However, when Sean begins having an affair with Ghost’s wife Tasha (Naturi Naughton) and Kanan gets released from jail, the gangster attempts to get his son to kill Ghost in an act of revenge. When Shawn is unable to carry about his father’s wishes, Kanan kills him by shooting him in the stomach and then in the head for his weakness.
Shawn’s death solidified Kanan as one of the most diabolical characters on TV.
Kanan named his son Shawn after his best friend Famous in the ‘Power’ Universe
Now that we are stepping back in time into Kanan’s teen years, we are learning more about how he became the man that went down in a blaze of glory. At one point, long before killing his son, Kanan was sentimental. Power Book III: Raising Kanan fans have discovered that Shawn is likely named after Kanan’s best friend, Famous.
On the show, Shawn “Famous” Figueroa (Antonio Ortiz), wants to be a star. However, he’s also very much invested in trying to get into Kanan’s family business. Clearly Famous meant a great deal to Kanan for him to name his only son after him.
‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ fans have a theory that Kanan isn’t Shawn’s father
In addition to uncovering the origin of Shawn’s name, fans also believe that Kanan might not necessarily be Shawn’s father. If he was, how could he kill him so callously? “I have a feeling Davina (Lovie Simone) is pregnant with Buck Twenty’s baby and out of guilt Kanan raises the baby as his own,” one fan tweeted. “Would explain why Kanan had no problem killing Sean… #RaisingKanan #PowerBookIII.”
As Raising Kanan fans know, Kanan and his friends teamed up and shot Davina’s boyfriend Buck Twenty when they believed he was encroaching on Raq’s territory. However, this theory might not hold up. In Power Season 2, we met Shawn’s mother and Kanan’s longtime lover Jarita (Tasha Smith).
Still, we are excited to see how things pan out with Davina and Kanan.
