WARNING: Major spoilers for Riverdale's mid-season finale below.
RIVERDALE fans have been left devastated as the mid-season finale for the Netflix series appeared to kill off Cole Sprouse's Jughead Jones.
Viewers saw a flashforward scene which appeared to show Betty holding a rock in her hand while Jughead lay unconscious on the floor, with Archie holding on to him and asking: "What did you do Betty?"
But will Betty really kill her boyfriend?
"Jughead is not dead okay, Betty did not kill him okay, everything is going to be good okay, okay?" tweeted one devastated fan while another added: "I'm sorry but I refuse to believe Betty killed Jughead. I'm not having it."
Others refused to believe that the scene that ended the episode was really going to be the end for Jughead: "So are they trying to make us believe that Jughead Jones is really dead and Betty killed him under hypnosis because…"
But some fans reckon that there may be something else going on.
"What if it’s all in Betty’s head and they’re trying to make her go crazy," suggested one wannabe detective to which another replied: "I could see it.
"It’s almost like recreating the Caramel flashback only this time Jughead is Betty’s most-loved companion."
One fan also jumped on the theory train and suggested it could have been another of Betty's nightmares.
"Betty 'killing' Jughead with a rock could just be a nightmare that she has because she is terrified of becoming full on 'dark Betty' and a serial killer." they shared.
They added: "However I’m not sure if they would have such a huge cliffhanger for the midseason finale if it isn’t even real."
Another had a different theory: "It would actually be kinda funny if while searching for Jughead in the woods he jumps out and Betty instinctively hits him with a rock, but just knocks him out, then when he comes to he tells them about the secret society and says they make a plan to fake his death."
Riverdale's fourth season will return to Netflix in the new year after a Christmas break.
Much of the early episodes heavily centred around the death of Fred Andrews, who was played by the late Luke Perry.
Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa made the revelation to Vanity Fair, telling the mag: “We thought that rather than try to squeeze something in [season three], we would let the season play out and then really do it justice and honor both Luke and Fred at the beginning of season four."
The loss of Perry “absolutely is informing and changing what we’re doing in Season 4", he added.
"Especially in terms of Archie’s story but really in the overall tone of the show”.
