Riverdale season 5 theories: Bughead torn apart as first trailer teases their ‘last dance’

Riverdale: Archie and Betty lay in bed with each other

The Riverdale gang will finally be able to enjoy their high school prom after several months of coronavirus delays. With the thrilling new season coming up on The CW and Netflix in January, the first trailer released on Twitter has hinted towards darkness and despair in Bughead’s future.

Fans have predicted a dramatic break up between Riverdale favourites Betty Cooper (played by Lili Reinhart) and Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) in the upcoming season.

Series producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa took to Twitter to release the first trailer for season five, which is set to premiere on Wednesday, January 20.

Episodes will also be made available the next day on Netflix, ensuring fans across the globe will be able to discuss the inevitable twists and turns.

The first trailer for the upcoming instalment has given a sneak peek at the first episodes of season five, which were intended to air earlier this year.

After the delayed chapters are finally unleashed on Riverdale fans, the series is set to take a dramatic seven year leap into the future.

Following what is sure to be an unpredictable final year, fans will finally discover what’s in store for Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), Betty and Jughead’s adulthood.

Long term friends Archie and Betty had a brief, yet scandalising affair in the latest season, and it’s expected all sorts of secrets will be spared before their senior year is through.

Their deceitful actions, plus a number of key clues in the latest trailer, have already convinced a significant portion of Riverdale’s fan base that one or both couples will split before the season five time jump.

In the new footage, a sinister handheld camera approaches Betty and Jughead in bed, seemingly confirming the pair as the Videotape Killer’s next victims.

Meanwhile, Jughead’s half-brother Charles Smith (Wyatt Nash) warns the couple from jail: “Something’s coming. And it’s gonna hit you like a Mack Truck.”

Although the promise of an approaching prom would normally be considered a reason to celebrate, nothing is ever so simple in the town of Riverdale.

Further appearances of creepy masked figures and even a hanged corpse indicate the season openers could be some of the series’ darkest chapters yet.

Plus, as ‘Bughead’ gets up close and personal, their intimate moments are offset by a foreboding warning from Archie.

His nose bleeding, presumably from his latest bare-knuckle boxing match, he says: “This’ll be the last dance we ever had with our friends.”

Despite the affair, Archie and Veronica seemed to still be going strong when we last saw Riverdale back in May of this year.

However, tensions are running extremely high in the latest trailer, and the ominous tone threatens to break up the whole gang before they reunite seven years later.

Riverdale’s ‘last dance’ could be interpreted in any number of ways, and could have tragic implications for the series’ long-lasting power couples.

Moreover, ‘exes to lovers’ seemed to be a recurring theme in the comments following the release of the new trailer.

Bughead may be destined for a messy break-up in the earlier episodes of season five, but fans have their fingers crossed for a romantic reunion as the next instalment goes on.

Riverdale season 5 premieres Wednesday, January 20 on the CW, and the following Thursday on Netflix.
