Ruth Langsford hugs Phillip Schofield as he announces he’s gay on This Morning

Ruth Langsford, 60, and her husband Eamonn Holmes, 60, were joined by Phillip Schofield, 57, on the show today after he took to Instagram to reveal the news he is gay. After an interview with his This Morning co-host Holly Willoughby, 38, the presenter was joined by the Loose Woman star, who praised him for coming out.

As it is Friday, Ruth and Eamonn were on hand to present the entire show today, but handed the reigns over to Phillip and Holly yo start the programme in light of the former’s news.

After the interview, the crew on the studio floor cheered in support for their colleague, with today’s hosts joining their co-stars on the sofa.

Walking over to join them, Ruth was the first to give her colleague a big hug, before he reached his hand out to her husband.

She could be heard telling him: “Well done,” before sitting next to him on the sofa to conclude the segment.

“Better?” Ruth asked, knowing the relief Phillip would’ve been feeling, putting her arm around him as she and Eamonn praised him.

It’s the first time the pair have been on the show together since it was falsely reported that there had been a feud between them behind-the-scenes.

ITV have strongly denied any rumours of a feud between the presenters, with both appearing on stage together at the National Television Awards last week.

Eamonn commented on his colleagues news, telling him: “Nobody should be embarrassed about their sexuality.”

“I’m not,” Phillip replied, to which Eamonn added: “It’s fantastic that you have spoken out and there will be so many people who will be strengthened by what you said.”

Ruth continued to comfort her colleague, with Holly wrapping her arms around her co-host and resting her head on his shoulder.

The news first broke earlier today when the presenter took to social media to share his personal news.

After 27 years of marriage to wife Steph Lowe, the This Morning star spoke in-depth about his decision to make his sexuality public knowledge.

Phillip told Holly at the start of the interview: “It’s funny because, everyone I’ve spoken to, you, have all been so supportive and so loving and caring and my entire family, have grabbed us and said ’It’s okay, we love you, we’re proud of you.’

“Every person I tell, it gets a little lighter and a little lighter.

“At the same time, I have made this decision which is essential for me and essential for my head.”

He continued: “I am very aware that Steph and the girls are at home watching this.

“We are all together. We have spent a lot of time together and they’ve been supporting us as we got to this moment.

“I feel a little lighter but I also am very aware there’s no question, it causes pain and it causes upset.”

Phillip added: “This is not something that has happened quickly.

“We have gone through this together. Steph, I can’t write in any statement what I think about that woman.

“She is amazing, she is incredible, there is no one in my life who would have supported me in the way she has supported me, she is astonishing.”

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
