The ITV detective series is set to come to an end after a successful nine series and will leave viewers heartbroken at the departure of the much-loved Fred Thursday. Actor Roger Allam who plays the witty detective, has since moved on to another ITV crime drama, Murder In Provence, and has opened up about saying goodbye to Fred.
Since the filming for Endeavour came to an end, Roger has dipped his toe into another crime series, where he has taken on the role of Antoine Verlaque.
Touching on having the freedom to take on new characters, Roger expressed: “Well, I’ve never done any job for as long as Endeavour.
“I only agreed to do it for two years, but I’ve stayed longer because there have always been reasons to do it, year by year, and it has been great developing one character over a long period of time, it’s something I’ve never done before.
“Of course, I’ll be very sad to say goodbye to Endeavour and that family – I’ve worked with Shaun so closely and Anton Lesser, who I’ve known for many years.
“But it’s right that it should end, it can’t go on forever, and it will hopefully free up time to do other things.
“There have been various things that I haven’t been able to do because of Endeavour, so hopefully, those kinds of jobs will still be around,” he said.
Roger also addressed his worries of taking on another crime series off the back of Endeavour.
“Well, I did think about that, but they’re very different characters, and that’s what always appealed to me about acting, doing very different things,” he began.
“Of course, both shows are about solving crimes, but they’re utterly different. It’s an utterly different period of history because Fred Thursday is somebody who fought through the Second World War, and we’re just getting into the very early 1970s now.
“He’s from a working-class London background, while Antoine is from a very wealthy flour business.
“There’s a lot of money behind him, which he tries to escape by being a judge and working for the public good. They’re very different men, so that felt okay.”
Endeavour is the prequel of the highly acclaimed Inspector Morse seriess, which followed a young Endeavour Morse (played by Shaun Evans) at the beginning of his career.
Morse joined the Newton Police, where he was introduced to Fred Thursday, and the pair formed an unlikely friendship after taking Morse underneath his wing.
Alongside their blossoming friendship, the series follows the crimes the pair have to investigate, but their alliance is at the forefront of the series.
Roger recently admitted he didn’t think he would have lasted nine series on the show.
He shared it was done tactically as he was initially asked to do three years, “but then you get into it”.
“In a sense, because they cunningly didn’t try and make me sign up initially for a long period of time because it was more year by year, it was much easier to say yes. And I love the character as well!” he added to Radio Times.
Since Endeavour is coming to an end, Roger has taken on the role of Antoine Verlaque, an urbane sophisticate with an English grandmother and a wealthy Parisian background from which he’s more or less estranged.
Murder in Provence is not based on a true story but has been adapted from the books of M.L. Longworth by Downton Abbey writer Shelagh Stephenson.
The first episode of the series is based on the second novel – Murder in the Rue Dumas. There are nine books in the series in total, and it is available to watch on Britbox.
Endeavour series 1-8 is available to watch on ITV Hub.
