Netflix subscribers were impressed with the latest spiritual successor to The Office when season one was released in May. Although Space Force was packed with laughs, fans have also been speculating about the new sitcom’s unanswered questions.
Billed as a cross between The Office and The Martian, the first season of Space Force took aim at one of the most hilarious developments of the Trump administration.
Co-creators Steve Carell and Greg Daniels began work on the series when US President Donald Trump announced plans for new space missions under the heading ‘Space Force’.
The first season stars Carell as four star General Mark Naird, who is promoted to Head of Operations for a dysfunctional team of awkward specialists and amateur astronauts.
Although it received mixed reviews, the ten episode series shot to the top of Netflix’s charts and provided some light relief for subscribers during the ongoing coronavirus lockdown.

However, the star-studded sitcom also explored some darker touches as it is revealed General Naird’s wife Maggie (played by Lisa Kudrow) is currently serving a 40-year prison sentence.
Showrunners Greg Daniels and Steve Carell intentionally kept Maggie’s crime a secret throughout the first season.
But, this hasn’t stopped fans formulating some highly convincing theories for how Maggie came to be serving substantial jail time.
Many viewers found Mark and Maggie’s relationship suspicious, given Mark tries his best to remain a devoted husband despite the length of his wife’s sentence hinting she could have been found guilty of murder.
Fans have been taking to Reddit following the release of the show’s first season to debate how Maggie could have landed 40 years worth of hard time.
One viewer argued: “I agree with what other people have pointed out in the past: it’s a 40 year sentence, no one suggests she is innocent, and her family still love her.
“So it’s probably not murder or anything violent or an identifiable victim.”
As well as Mark’s intent on remaining in a committed relationship, their daughter Erin (Diana Silvers) shows no signs of broken trust towards her mother.

Moreover, the fan points out Erin’s Space Force nickname ‘Scraps’ could be hinting towards her mother’s criminal past.
They continued: “My guess is she had some sort of mania about living in Colorado and did something weird because she was going crazy.
“It ended up being a federal crime with harsh sentences. Could be disclosing/selling military secrets.”
Revealing military secrets to other world powers could be classed as high treason and grounds enough to land a former government official a formidable prison sentence.

Maggie selling ‘scraps’ of information could also explain her daughter’s new nickname, as well as revealing why the Chinese government is so ahead of America’s space efforts during the show.
One more fan agreed and added: “My guess is that it was a personal offense against the president that got treated as treason. They all know she isn’t really different, but there is no hope of getting her out because it’s a personal vendetta by the President.”
Given the series is lampooning Donald Trump’s political career, stirring up trouble between the US and China could set the stage for even sharper Presidential satire in season two.
Space Force season 1 is available to stream on Netflix.
