FOLLOWING endless financial disagreements between Disney and Sony, Spider-Man is expected to make a shock exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The news has stunned fans across the world, who have enjoyed the superhero’s notable inclusion in movies such as Avengers: Endgame.
What does the Sony-Disney split mean?
Both studios have struggled coming to an agreement regarding a new contract concerning Spider-Man’s future with the MCU.
Previously, Disney had agreed that it would take 5% of the “first dollar” profits, along with all of the merchandising revenue.
This time around, however, the billion-dollar firm had hoped to change those terms so that both studios would share the profits made from Spider-Man with a 50-50 split.
Sony didn’t take a liking to the proposal, and while negotiations continued, neither of them would budge, ultimately resulting in Spider-Man being yanked from any future Marvel movies.
This is particularly worrying since the recent release of Spider-Man: Far From Home generated an incredible $1.1 billion, which now holds the title for being the highest-grossing film in the franchise.
Marvel head Kevin Feige has played a pivotal part in producing the last five Spider-Man movies, having also acted as the lead producer of the billion-dollar blockbuster flicks.
In an official statement by Sony Pictures, it was revealed that the studio is still hoping for a turnaround from Disney’s end because, while it won’t budge for a 50-50 split, further negotiations could still lead to a happy result on both ends.
Via Twitter, the statement reads: “Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise.
"We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film".
Sony continued: “We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own”.
Of course, renegotiating an alternative deal would be something that Disney has to be open to before fans can stop stressing about Spider-Man potentially being out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for good.
