Spoilers: Corrie boss Iain MacLeod reveals if Gary will kill again

Gary Windass (Mikey North) has become a shell of his former self in Coronation Street due to his experiences over the past year. The former builder has transitioned into one of the most sinister characters on the cobbles, and it’s his actions which lead to the shooting which takes place over the festive season.

Yes, it’s safe to say that Gary is a far cry from the person he was this time last year. The events of the last twelve months have had quite the impact on him, and he’s evolved into a much darker human being as a result of what he’s experienced.

The part he played in Rana Habeeb’s (Bhavna Limbachia) death was instrumental in starting him down a darker path, and his alliance with Rick Neelan (Greg Wood) only made matters worse — and as a result, he ended up killing the loan shark when he threatened Sarah (Tina O’Brien).

Since then, Gary has become a loan shark himself — and he’s proven just how far he’s willing to go in order to exert his authority when he beat up Ryan (Ryan Preston) after the young lad was unable to pay up.

Speaking about Gary’s transition, Corrie boss Iain MacLeod said: ‘Gary did come into the show among a family who were described as the Sopranos of Weatherfield a very long time ago and he was a right old ne’er-do-well. We did gentrify him over the years and put him in a metaphorical pair of slippers.

However, in spite of the things Gary’s done, there’s still seemingly some good in there, and Iain clarified that, saying: ‘One thing he’s never been is an out and out murderer. He’s not Phelan. He never intended Rana to die and Rick, he did kill to some degree in self-defence but also because he knew if he let him loose, he would kill Sarah, the person he totally loved at that time.’

‘Those were the worst things he is capable of. I don’t see him transitioning into a cold blooded murderer at all.’

In spite of it being the season of goodwill, the eponymous street is set to be the scene of a terrifying shooting over the Christmas period, and Gary’s feud with Derek Milligan (Craig Els) is the catalyst in the events which unfold. Yes, as the animosity between the two reaches boiling point — Derek seeks vengeance with a firearm.

As Gary runs from his enemy, he ends up in Winter Wonderland, ordering those around him to take cover. Derek is ready to do whatever it takes to get revenge, and plenty of Weatherfield regulars will find themselves in danger as a result.

Speaking of Christmas, Iain spoke about what’s to come, and revealed how this event will give Gary a wake-up call. He said: ‘Christmas is huge and triggered somewhat triggered by Gary’s descent to the dark side. This will provide him with a massive wake up call. As a he tries to rationalise the terrible things that have happened, he’s unable to talk himself out of his guilt.’

‘His experiences with Rick have changed him permanently — he won’t ever go back to cuddly Gary Windass who takes Jake to the park. He’ll still do that but his experiences have changed him permanently into a slightly darker character.’
