Spoilers: Ray takes centre stage in Corrie's explosive 60th anniversary

Ray Crosby’s (Mark Frost) plan has well and truly been set in motion in Coronation Street, and the sleazy hotelier will seemingly have a huge few months ahead, as he’s set to feature in a big story for the soap’s 60th anniversary.

David Platt (Jack P Shepherd) was horrified to discover a massive sinkhole in his back garden during tonight’s hour-long episode (September 11), and — with the house being deemed unsafe to live in — he found himself in quite the predicament.

However, Ray revealed that the Platt family would be more than welcome to stay at one of his lavish hotels — which was suspicious to say the least.

As the episode came to an end, it was revealed that the hotelier was behind the sinkhole, and he’s hellbent on expanding his empire by buying up as many properties on the cobbles as he can.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk about Ray’s intentions, actor Mark said: ‘ I think he does see himself an empire builder, so he is looking to purchase property and get his business to grow exponentially.

‘I think what’s going to come as a surprise is just what means he’s willing to go to — what lengths he’s willing to go to — to get his plans put his plans in place, and the odds that’s going to put him at with the rest of the Weatherfield community.’

The storyline in question is seemingly set to run for quite some time — with Mark confirming that Ray has an ally on the cobbles — but how does the actor feel about being at the centre of a huge milestone such as the 60th anniversary?

He told us: ‘It’s massive. Whatever kind of actor you are, or whatever sort of career you’ve had. For me anyway, Coronation Street is a massive show, and that heritage that it has is extraordinary and to be a part of it at all at such a landmark period is huge. To be at the centre of the action is even more remarkable, really. It’s fantastic!

‘It was a bit of a family event watching Corrie, we all got together to watch it, and my mum’s no longer around, she’s been dead for 13 years, but I like to think somewhere she’s having a giggle and a smile, and watching down.

‘I just wish she could be a part of it. My dad watches on. It’ll be huge, it’s great. Long may Corrie continue afterwards, and it’s just lovely to be a part it at all, really.’

Coronation Street continues Friday September 11 at 7:30pm on ITV.
