Spoilers: What happens next in Emmerdale as Malone dies?

DI Malone (Mark Womack) arrived in Emmerdale back in March, and with his black jacket and snarly glares, the residents of the village knew immediately that he wasn’t around to have a laugh with them in The Woolpack!

His affair with Harriet Finch (Katherine Dow Blyton) has been the main focus of his time in the village but he’s also had run-ins with other people.

Additionally, the lack of care he and Harriet took when conducting their affair meant both Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) and Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley) have discovered their romance.

On Monday (August 17), Malone tried to threaten Dawn as she reported him to the police, but after an intense showdown, Harriet came to Dawn’s rescue, and Malone was left for dead.

Things escalated during tonight’s episode (August 19), as a terrified Dawn shot and killed Malone.

Harriet witnessed her lover getting killed, and now both she and Dawn have a pretty big problem on their hands.

But with fellow villagers also having got on the wrong side of Malone, what is next for them all now that bent copper is out of the picture?

Dawn Taylor

Dawn Taylor found herself caught up in Harriet and Malone’s drama after she discovered Harriet was betraying her dad. A classic ‘you tell him or I will’ threat from Dawn was only just the beginning for her because as soon as Malone got wind of the fact that another person knew about his secrets, it was time for him to do what he does best and try and scare Dawn away.

Despite Malone’s attempts at trying to make Dawn take her own life by overdosing on heroin, Dawn ultimately shot him dead — with Harriet witnessing the whole thing.

So how will Dawn cope now she has killed someone? The shock of it could make her struggle — which could lead her to feel as though going back on the drugs is her only way of dealing with the trauma.

How will she manage her relationship with Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle)? Will she confess all to Billy so he can attempt to support her? Or will she hide everything which will only make things even more difficult?

Furthermore, what could the way out for Dawn be? Prison? Drugs? Or maybe even leaving the village and running away?

Harriet Finch

It seemed Harriet’s only problem was worrying about how to tell Will Taylor (Dean Andrews) that she had been kissing another man, but now she has the small matter of Malone’s lifeless body to deal with, so it begs the question of will Harriet join Dawn in covering up the sinister copper’s death?

Tonight’s episode certainly seemed to indicate she was willing to go the full way to assist Dawn, but how will it be done? No, we’re not talking about socially distancing themselves from Malone as that won’t really be at the top of their priority list, we’re talking more about what they’ll do with the body…

Now the affair is over, will Harriet confess all to Will about what she’s been up to? Harriet might think telling Will the truth could make things easier when it comes to dealing with Malone’s death but if Will learns of Harriet’s dishonest behaviour and she later asks him for help, will he even want to? Or could he let her deal with it all on her own?

Will Taylor

Will and Malone have had their fair share of confrontations over the past few months, and now with Malone dead, these clashes will stir up some trouble for Will. We’ve already seen Will attack Malone once before, so could this increase his chances of getting framed for DI Malone’s death?

Let’s not forget that Dawn now knows about Harriet and Malone’s affair, so to make things easier for Dawn, she could well reveal all to her dad, and work together to have Harriet framed. There are plenty of possibilities when it comes to Will’s involvement, and it’ll all come down to three options: help Dawn? Or help Harriet? Or help them both and frame another resident? But who?

Cain Dingle

That brings us on nicely to the next person to talk about – Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley). Cain is another person who isn’t exactly in the best position now. Harriet knows full well that Cain wanted swift vengeance on Malone after he thought he was responsible for Moira’s hit and run accident.

Harriet probably doesn’t realise this at the minute, but the information she has about Cain and his previous encounters will prove beneficial for her if she wants to clear her name. Wearing her dog collar and knowing full well that vicars are incredibly honest, a lie about Cain could easily be believed by the police if it came from Harriet.

So can Cain provide an alibi and prove that he was definitely out of the village at the time of the shooting, or will he be the first person in the Dales wrongly accused of this murder?

Moira Dingle

Moira will no doubt be glad to see the back of Malone after he threatened her, and while we don’t think Moira will be framed for the copper’s death, knowing about DI Malone’s secret relationship with Harriet isn’t going to go away anytime soon.

If Moira were to discover that Dawn also knew about Harriet’s betrayal — and that Malone had threatened her also — the two of them could find themselves blackmailing Harriet into doing something for either their own or someone else’s benefit…”do this or we’ll reveal the affair” is a line we can see one of them saying soon…

Jamie and Kim

Jamie’s (Alexander Lincoln) still struggling with being responsible for hospitalising Moira as well as his love triangle drama with Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper) and Andrea (Anna Nightingale)! So once Jamie and his ever-loving mother Kim Tate (Claire King) find out that Malone is dead, they could well ease Jamie’s paranoia if they make it look like Malone was actually behind the hit and run..

It’s a worthy theory, but as we regularly see, Jamie’s guilt is continuing grow, so if the hit and run was buried along with Malone, could he really carry on as he is?

Let’s be realistic, even though plenty of residents will be glad to see the end of Malone, something so big will ripple through the Dales and affect plenty of families.

Blackmail, lies, and accusations are possibly all on the way and while Malone may not be here anymore, his bad behaviour will haunt all of these characters, with potentially huge repercussions for them during the aftermath…
