Emperor Palpatine is back for the final episode of the Skywalker saga. But just how will he be defeated and by who? Well, a new Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker fan theory reckons Darth Maul is key to that answer.
Reddit user goodbeanz argues that although Darth Maul was initially thought dead after being defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi in Episode I: The Phantom Menace, he survived.
But only to still die at the hand of Obi-Wan later one= in Star Wars Rebels – a canon animated TV series which is set between Episodes III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope.
So, considering that Darth Vader “killed” Palpatine in Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, presumably it will be Anakin Skywalker’s Force ghost in Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker who finishes him off?
Just think how epic that would be!

The fan theorist writes: “As of 1999, viewers watched Obi-Wan Kenobi kill Darth Maul in Episode I.
“Then in Rebels, Maul was brought back only to die at the hands of Obi-Wan once more in a duel that thematically put a close to their fight
“(Maul tried using his same aggressive tactics against Obi-Wan, but Obi-Wan had ‘risen above”’ and defeated him in one strike).
“After watching this episode of Rebels, the net effect is the same. Maul still dies at the hands of Obi-Wan.”
They continued: “This ensures that viewers who saw their original fight many years ago don’t feel that the story has all of a sudden been changed.
“It ensures that the impact of their original fight remains intact.
“Similarly, we know Emperor Palpatine is killed by Anakin Skywalker at the end of Episode VI.
“If they were to bring him back in the flesh, which is being heavily hinted at, it seems likely that he will once again die at the hands of Anakin Skywalker.”

They added: “Similar to the Obi-Wan and Maul final fight, this ‘rematch’ can thematically add to their original fight while ensuring the impact of the original fight remains intact.”
Considering The Rise of Skywalker is concluding a story that began with Anakin’s arc in Episode I, it seems highly likely that he will return as a Force ghost once again.
Hayden Christensen was last seen in this role in the remastered version of Return of the Jedi, next to the Force ghosts of Yoda and Obi-Wan.
Our best bet is he has secretly shot the role and will team up with the other Force ghosts – maybe even Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon Jinn – to finally put an end to Palpatine.
Yoda’s Force ghost already made a return in The Last Jedi and we know the others are around having taught Luke – as revealed in an official tie-in book called The Secrets of the Jedi.
Let’s also not forget that Luke, although he died in The Last Jedi, has been confirmed as returning for The Rise of Skywalker as a Force ghost.
Just how epic would a Jedi Force ghost v Palpatine battle be to end the saga?
Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker is released in UK cinemas on December 19, 2019.
