Strictly Come Dancing 2019: ‘It’s not sex’ Len Goodman slams ‘raunchy’ dance routines

Strictly Come Dancing said goodbye to Len Goodman back in 2016 after he spent 14 years on the nation’s favourite dancing competition as the head judge. The dance professional is sorely missed by fans every single year the show airs on the BBC and he has recently spoken out about the performances he witnesses nowadays compared to those when the show first began.

In a recent interview with The Mirror, Len said spoke about the changes which have been made to the series since he left.

“Look, everything has to develop,” he began. “It’s like a plant. If you want it to thrive you have to prune it a bit and change it slightly to let it thrive.

“But you don’t pull a plant up and chop off the roots, you just tweak it slightly.

“A little tweaking I don’t mind, but I liked Strictly as it was,” he added.

In relation to some of the performances he has witnessed over the years, Len said: “It’s not only sex, I used to hate it even if a swing was involved and they were sitting on a swing.

“And props, going down on one knee, giving them a rose. Get on with it!”

While Len decided to step away from Strictly, he is still a judge on Dancing With The Stars – the US version of Strictly Come Dancing.

Next Monday, the 2019 series draws to a close and when asked if he’ll miss it, his response was: “Probably, yes.

“But I didn’t exactly miss it when I packed up doing Strictly.”

In the last couple of years and especially this year, BBC One viewers have seen the judges take to the dance floor and performed themselves and even with the other professional dancers.

Len spoke out about the times he had to perform on the shows and expressed his dislike for taking part.

He said: “I got beaten down in the end. We used to have to dance on a bit, and I never liked that.

“I was anti that. I’m there as a judge, I’m not there as anything else.”

As with every year, the supposed Strictly ‘curse’ is branded around and Len gave his opinion on relationships being formed because of two people spending so much time together rehearsing.

Len says: “It’s unavoidable really. You take the tango and the rumba, they’re quite passionate dances, aren’t they?

“And with ballroom you’re in very close body contact. Look, I don’t mind it. Sometimes it’s lovely.

“I don’t like it if one part of the partnership is married or in a long-term relationship.

“But when you’re dancing together for six or seven hours a day, and it’s quite an intimate thing, you can understand how it can happen,” he explained.

It comes after Strictly Come Dancing said goodbye to Michelle Visage on Sunday night.

She and professional dance partner Giovanni Pernice faced the dance off against Saffron Barker and AJ Pritchard but failed to impress the judges enough to be saved.

Strictly Come Dancing returns on Saturday night on BBC One.
