Strictly Come Dancing: Giovanni Pernice addresses Debbie McGee partner snub

Christmas would not be the same if the Strictly Come Dancing wasn’t on air and this year will see a number of stars return to showcase their skills once more. Debbie McGee, who made it to the final in 2017, will return to perform with professional dancer Kevin Clifton. Her former partner Giovanni has now spoken out on being replaced.

Debbie and Giovanni had a brilliant partnership so it’s not surprising Kevin felt concerned over stepping into Giovanni’s shoes.

He has expressed his doubts over teaming up with the former magician’s assistant revealing he called Giovanni before agreeing to do so.

Speaking to press including Express.co.uk, Debbie explained: “I think it’s easier because you’ve been through the whole thing and it’s easier because you are not a complete novice, you’ve done all the techniques through the series.

“We haven’t had much time to rehearse but it would have been much more difficult if Kevin had to of gone into detail on every single thing but he’s been reminding me of techniques and given me some new tips, he’s pushed me further this time.”

Kevin interrupted: “I didn’t know what to expect from the training sessions whether she would have forgotten everything or retained but I think Giovanni did a good job.”

The pair then explained they had spoken to Giovanni about their pairing.

Kevin remarked: “I spoke to him and said i’m going to be dancing with Debbie.

“Gio said that it would be amazing and that she is a great dancer, but also she is really lovely.”

When asking Gio if there was anything choreographically the pair should head towards, Kevin said: “With Debbie you can do whatever you want.”

Kevin added he won’t let Giovanni live it down if he and Debbie go on to win the Christmas trophy.

The 2018 winner said: “100 percent he will be the first person I speak to if we win.”

The pro-dancer also revealed he spent a lot of time watching Debbie and Giovanni’s past dancers to really get a feel of the ballet dancer’s strengths, before training began.

Kevin won the main series last year so there’s no doubt he’d love to scoop the coveted Christmas crown too.

When asked if she felt pressure to win with Kevin, Debbie replied: “That is a lot of pressure on me.

“He makes me dust his awards every day just to remind me.”

Debbie and Kevin will be performing a Quickstep to Jingle Bells on Christmas Day in the hopes of winning the titles.

Kevin said: “I set the choreography but once we start performing it Debbie has a really good sense of performance and has all the mannerisms that work naturally so more stuff would come out.

“The more we danced it Debbie would naturally start doing things and I’d be like that, let’s block that in.”

Kevin and Debbie join reality star Mark Wright and Janette Manrara, Gemma Atkinson and Gorka Marquez, Joe Sugg and Dianne Buswell, Chizzy Akudolu and Graziano Di Prima and Richard Arnold and Luba Mushtuk for the special instalment.
