Susanna Reid fumes at government minister as she grills him over Covid travel

Susanna Reid has been praised by ITV viewers after she gave one particular government minister a real grilling live on air.

This comes after Business minister Kwasi Kwarteng appeared on Good Morning Britain on Monday to discuss Covid travel rules and vaccinations.

This comes as foreign holidays for Brits could yet another setback amid the rise of the Delta variant, which is between 40 and 80 per cent more transmissible than the Alpha (Kent) strain.

Less than a dozen countries have been on the UK's green list of travel destinations, which is set to be reviewed again at the end of the month.

PM Boris Johnson recently admitted he was "so concerned" about the new strain and that it was "spreading faster than the third wave predicted in the February roadmap".

So on Monday's episode, Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng, who admitted to being exempt from his own government's quarantine rules when he returned from a trip in the Gulf, soon found himself challenged by hosts Susanna and Adil Ray.

Taking no prisoners at all, Susanna, 50, was quick to attack the minister on what she believes is an unfair and hypocritical approach to quarantine rules.

Beginning her rant about Covid rules and how some people seem to be exempt, she said to the politician: "In what way are you immune to Covid?"

"In what way are fans or VIPs coming for the final at Wembley immune to Covid or unlikely to pass it on in a way that those travellers from other countries aren't?"

Susanna was citing the quarantine-free access that exclusive UEFA attendees – such as politicians – might receive for the Euros 2020 final, which has prompted backlash from the public who see it as discarding public health.

Currently, the few countries on the green list include Australia, New Zealand, the Falkland Islands, Iceland, Gibralter, and Singapore.

She then said, "it just seems like it's one rule for special people and another rule for everybody else".

Kwasi replied saying that there are exceptional circumstances with regards to travel rules, but he was quickly interrupted by Adil who also had some stern words.

Adil told the minister that is "doesn't work" citing the relaxed rules for the G7 summit which arguably led to an outbreak in Cornwall.

Adil continued: "Why should it be a different rule for you and UEFA VIPs and sponsors than the rest of us who all want to go on holiday".

Many viewers on social media were delighted with Susanna and Adil's fiery roasting of the minister, with one taking to Twitter to comment: "@susannareid100 & @adilray absolutely superb on @GMB right now with a masterclass in how to hold a truth twisting Government to account with simple facts. Other news shows should watch & learn."

A second then agreed, slamming the MP and writing: "They were indeed brilliant. @KwasiKwarteng was a disgrace, trying to brush off questions with ‘I’ve answered this before’ and then defending Dido Harding’s comments on NHS staffing!"

A third chimed in to comment: "Susanna Reid skewering Kwasi Kwarteng. Tell him to stop lying ffs."

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays at 6am on ITV.
