The new production from ‘The Zero Theorem’ filmmaker has been called off in London because of backlash over his remarks about MeToo and LGBTQ among other issues.
AceShowbiz –Terry Gilliam‘s new production of “Into the Woods” has been cancelled at The Old Vic in London following reports of controversial remarks made by the director.
The reasons for the cancellation are not clear but sources tell theatre industry outlet The Stage venue staff were unhappy with comments from Gilliam about the #MeToo movement and trans rights issues.
The former Monty Python regular previously described the #MeToo movement as a “witch hunt,” claiming “decent people” were getting “hammered” by sexual abuse allegations.
The Old Vic’s former artistic director, Kevin Spacey, was among the people worst affected by the #MeToo movement when allegations were made about his behaviour on and off film sets.
Last year, Gilliam told The Independent he was “tired” of “white men being blamed for everything wrong with the world.” He added, “When I announce that I’m a black lesbian in transition, people take offence at that. Why?”
Reports suggest Old Vic staff members raised concerns about hosting Gilliam’s production of Steven Sondheim’s musical earlier this year (21).
A statement from Old Vic bosses, obtained by The Stage, reads, “Ahead of any season announcement, senior management at The Old Vic would meet with the directors who are programmed to work in the season as a matter of course to discuss our culture and values. This happened with the co-directors of Into the Woods, Terry Gilliam and Leah Hausman.”
A separate statement posted on the theatre’s website notes, “The Old Vic and co-producers Scenario Two have mutually agreed that the production of Into the Woods, scheduled for spring 2022, will not take place at The Old Vic. All ticket bookers will be contacted directly. The Old Vic wishes the show well for its future life.”
Gilliam has yet to comment.
His show was due to debut at the Old Vic in the spring (22).
