There are plenty of superhero films coming out in 2022, with many of them boasting their extended universes. DC’s The Flash is one of them as it will contain not one, but two Caped Crusaders – Michael Keaton from the 1989 classic Batman, and Ben Affleck bidding farewell to his character from Batman V Superman and Justice League. It means audiences will have three Dark Knights in one year, with Robert Pattinson taking on the role in The Batman. Don’t expect his Dark Knight to join the others though, as Matt Reeves has insisted his film is separate from the rest.
The development of the latest Batman adaptation had a very different start from where it finds itself now. When Ben Affleck first starred as the iconic character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, confirmation of his own solo movie came soon after.
The project fell into the dreaded development hell, with Affleck also writing and directing the project. After four years of gestation, the star dropped out of the film in 2020, all but confirming its cancellation. Despite rumours of other directors picking up the movie with the 49-year-old in the lead, this was soon brushed under the rug.
Matt Reeves came on board, throwing Affleck’s script out and starting the project from scratch. Instead of focusing on the older, been-there-done-that Bats, he opted to write about a younger, less experienced hero. One that required a new actor to bring the hero to life.
