The life of profiler Liz Keen (played by Megan Boone) was made exceedingly complicated by the arrival of the mysterious criminal Raymond Reddington (James Spader) in The Blacklist. Their relationship eventually led to Liz ending up on The Blacklist herself, however, past events have hinted that the character could be making a surprise return after her shocking exit in the season eight finale of the NBC drama.
Liz is a beloved character on the NBC series and has had an extraordinary character arc over the years.
Though, it will be interesting to see how her father figure, Red, gets on without her in the newly announced ninth season of the show.
In season three, episode 18, Liz faked her own death to protect her daughter Agnes from Red as he had failed to protect Liz numerous times.
This has led fans to believe that, despite her death in the season eight finale, Liz is actually in hiding to protect herself once again.
In the season three episode, Mr Solomon, Liz’s team were distraught to find her “dead” in an ambulance after an emergency c-section was performed.
As they were being hunted by Mr Solomon as she was giving birth, a decoy ambulance was sent out to divert them.
However, Liz was found and Red blamed himself for not being able to save her in time.
With the profiler going to such extreme lengths to fake her own death, could she be doing the same thing again, especially as she is now in more danger than ever before?
There is also another important reason why Liz might not be dead just yet as the real identity of Red has yet to be fully confirmed.
The show had previously revealed that Red Reddington was not who he said he was, and fans finally got the confirmation a few seasons ago that this was, in fact, true.
Viewers have long believed that Red is closely related to Liz, as the master criminal will do anything to protect and save her life.
Red later revealed that he was actually a KGB spy named Ilya Koslov, who assumed the identity of the real Red after he was murdered.
However, the speculation didn’t stop and it was later discovered that Red was lying and he is not Ilya.
With speculation growing, and fans questioning whether or not Red is the real father of Elizabeth, the season eight episode Nachalo failed to provide definitive answers.
Liz has previously discovered that her real mother is a Russian spy named Katarina Rostova (Lotte Verbeek and Laila Robins) and that her biological father is the real Reddington.
So could the writers still be refusing to kill off Liz as the show’s biggest mystery has yet to be solved?
Fans on Reddit believe that there is no way the show would get rid of Liz before she knew the truth about Red’s identity.
One viewer wrote: “This she did not deserve. To die without knowing the truth, to die and leave her daughter behind.. writers really had no mercy for her.”
“I have never imagined they killed her off,” someone else commented.
The secret of his identity has been built up for over eight years so it may make sense that the writers would do something dramatic before finally revealing the truth to patient audience members.
Whether or not Liz is really dead remains to be seen but, it is clear that the crime series still has plenty of twists left up its sleeve so, hopefully, Liz being alive is one of them.
All eight seasons of The Blacklist are available to watch on NOW TV.
