NBC’s crime thriller will finally return with its ninth season in October after the season finale ended with a huge twist. Ahead of its release, some viewers have shared their theory and believe Cynthis Panabaker (played by Deirdre Lovejoy) will be exposed as the government mole in the upcoming season of The Blacklist
Taking to Reddit, user Keywestsheep stated: “It was said that there was a mole in the highest level of government but Red was hardly high up in the government since he was the FBI’s informer and his Intel was much better.
“So that threat is still there and from what we’ve seen thus far, Panabaker is an excellent mole candidate,” they added.
The FBI task force was created to stop moles from entering their team, however, this hasn’t always gone to plan.
Devoted fans will remember in Season three when Samar Nawabi (Mozán Marno) was found to be sending information to Mossad.
Although the team had fought moles in the past it has been a while since fans have seen one employed in the task force.
Now fans believe Panabaker could be the government mole which would make the longest-running mole in the series.
She was first introduced in season three when she escorted Liz Keene (Megan Boone) to the federal courthouse alongside a US Marshall.
In the season eight finale Panabaker told the Department of Justice directive to issue a burn notice on Liz Keen.
She told the team her plans: “As soon as Keen’s handled, the DOJ will disavow all knowledge of the Task Force, kick Reddington free.”
If her plans all worked out, the task force would be as though it “never existed.”
Reddit user Bigfoot_76 agreed with the theory: “Very few people had the gas to stop Laurel and Peter in their tracks, Cynthia did. You don’t tell people like that what to do unless you have some serious power.
Cynthia did just that on her first episode, Peter Kotsiopulos (David Strathairn) and Laurel Hitchin (Christine Lahti) tried to stop her from escorting Liz by trying to remove her under the guise of intel indicating an imminent attack from Russia.
However, that backfired when Cynthia revealed the Director of National intelligence reviewed the intel about a Russian attack but upheld the original transfer order.
Another fan IKiShtili shared their hope for season nine: ”The surprising betrayal that we are going to have still bugs me a lot and I hope it will be Panabaker.
They added: “I can’t stand the betrayal of anyone else so this is my hope as well, Panabaker – the next big bad, Reddington against Panabaker would be interesting to watch.”
The season eight finale saw Liz suffer a fatal gunshot wound by one of Neville Townsend’s henchmen while meeting with Red.
However, the upcoming season nine may not explore her death right away, as it was revealed there would be a two-year time jump.
This will completely bypass a grieving period and could see the team dive back into action.
Hopefully, season nine will reveal whether or not Cynthia Panabaker is a mole as fans believe she could actually be working on the behalf of someone else.
The Blacklist returns on October 21 on NBC in the US. The show airs on Sky Max in the UK.
