The first season of The End of the F***ing World, which was released on both Channel 4 and Netflix, came out last year and ended with a massive cliffhanger. Fans thought this was the end of one of the show’s most popular characters but was it? Did James die?
Does James die at the end of The End of the F***ing World?
Warning: This article contains spoilers from The End of the F***ing World season 2.
Following the end of season one, it was unclear whether or not there would be a second series of the dark comedy.
Alyssa was being held down by armed police officers on a beach, screaming after James who was running for his life.
Suddenly, there was a gunshot and the screen went black, leaving everyone wanting to know if one of the show’s protagonists was dead.
But was James shot and ultimately killed on the beach?
The answers are yes, he was shot, but no, James did not die.
In the first episode, fans were introduced to Bonnie (Naomi Ackie) who is on a mission to kill James and Alyssa after the death of her professor and lover Clive Koch (Jonathan Aris) in season one.
However, we don’t see either of the teens until the second episode.
The pair had not seen each other since the day of the beach.
Following the shooting, James lost the ability to walk thanks to his injuries and was forced to stay away from Alyssa by the police and her mum Gwen (Christine Bottomley).
But when he got a bullet with his name on it, presumably from Bonnie, he decided to find where she was and started following Alyssa wherever she went. James finds out she is getting married to Todd (Josh Dylan) but still wants to look out for her.
This is until she confronts a car which had been following her – and realises it was James all along.
Prior to the second series though, Lawther himself was unsure whether James was killed off.
Speaking to NME, he said: “I was worried that James would be a ghost or in flashbacks. “Like in A Christmas Carol.”
The pair are not quite out of the woods just yet though.
In episode four of season two, the pair meet Bonnie – who wants to kill them.
She pretends to be a hitchhiker who they stop to pick up and when she slashes one of James’ tyres, they are forced to stay in a motel together.
So will Bonnie end up killing Alyssa and James in season three?
