The Handmaid’s Tale fans convinced Serena Joy will escape trial in Canada as June’s smuggled tape to Luke majorly backfires – The Sun

THE Handsmaid's Tale viewers were in shock when Serena was arrested at the end of the third season – but now fans are convinced she will escape trial for sexual slavery.

In the closing moments of the season three finale, Serena was stabbed in the back by husband Fred, who reported her for organising the 'rape' of June by Nick.

While Serena pleaded that the act was consensual, which it was, her words fell on deaf ears and she was carted off to await trial.

But one clever fan reckons June will be the key to Serena's salvation.

In a reddit post, user 'bloodinthefields' speculated that June's taped recordings, which she smuggled to Luke, will prove she wasn't forced into sleeping with Nick.

As viewers will remember, June insisted in the recordings that she was in love with Nick and that their baby Nichole was "born out of love".

The user began: “Realistically, if her case goes to trial, what proof does the ICC have that she coerced Nick and June into having sex?

“How can they prove sexual slavery when there is no Nick and no June to testify, and when Luke has a tape where June says Holly was born out of love?”

They continued with their theory, saying: “A good lawyer would get the case thrown in ten minutes.

“Serena has immunity for all the rest and even if she admits to the coercion and rape, she can still argue she did it to protect June, however much of a lie that is."

Other fans, however, think it will be Rita who comes to Serena's aid.

Rita escaped on the plane with the children of Gilead in the finale.

One poster commented: “Rita is definitely going to testify about her own experience in Gilead, and against the Waterfords.

“I’m curious what she'll say about Serena, since she seemed to have more compassion for her towards the end.”
