The Handmaid’s Tale season 4: June’s trauma foreshadowed in Gilead clue everyone missed

Fans of The Handmaid’s Tale will know that showrunners have dropped plenty of clues along the way that could foreshadow what will happen next to June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) and the handmaids. However, one fan has spotted a huge clue that may have paved the way for the entire series.

Going back to an scene in season one, a fan spoke out about an early flashback scene where June and her husband Luke Bankole (O. T. Fagbenle) were sat talking on the bench.

The scene took place before Gilead had taken over, but there is something the viewer spotted in the background that gave a nod towards the cruel takeover about to strike the family.

Was Gilead’s takeover predicted long before June was taken?

Reddit user almondz began: “One aspect of the cinematography in this show is how gorgeous but also subtly symbolic it can be.

“And there are plenty of little things the directors throw in to tantalize or provoke the viewer.

“In the first season, I remember seeing this a couple times—in the background of a few scenes, there are little girls wearing red dresses or jackets playing in the background.”

Fans of the series will know that the handmaids were forced to wear red after Gilead took over.

With the reasoning behind the uniform being that the colour symbolises fertility, it seems no accident the little girls were seen sporting the colour in the flashback clue.

The little girls wearing red were seen more than once, the fan added: “One is when June and Luke are sitting and talking and it happens again in another flashback but I’m having trouble recalling.

“They are just out of focus, but the camera lingers on them long enough for it to be obviously intentional.

“I took this as mostly just foreshadowing, but also symbolic of how the innocence of the little girls is also reflected in the adults’ lives, before they become so hardened by trauma.”

Could showrunners have been hinting at June’s future trauma?

Meanwhile, another fan thinks showrunners could be set to cut a number of major characters next season.

Reddit user Johnboysmole explained: “A lot of people have speculated June will (have to) go Underground in S4.

“…My fear is that it’ll look like when she was on the run whilst pregnant. Honestly, that was not my favourite few episodes.

“I’m at a loss as to how June can be properly underground and invisible but still regularly interact with all the other characters we enjoy.

“Any ideas? Or do you think it’ll be like when she went on the run whilst pregnant and essentially interacted with nobody from the regular cast but Nick?

The theory sparked a whole host of new theories about how June could run away but still see the major characters who remain in Gilead.

One user suspects June could find a place to spy on the fan-favourites who operate the regime.

The fan commented: “I think that depends. If she is in Gilead, it probably will be some hole in the wall abandoned building in the city that they are operating out of undetected.”

The Handmaid’s Tale season three is now available to stream on Hulu.
