The Masked Singer: ‘Who is he?’ Fans gobsmacked as Chameleon’s identity finally revealed

The Masked Singer was back on ITV with another episode of the weird and wonderful singing show. Tonight, five became four as Chameleon was the next to reveal his identity. But when he did, those watching at home were shocked to the core, with some not even knowing who the celebrity was. 

ITV’s latest singing offering has mixed reviews from viewers, nevertheless, millions tuned in once more to find out the next clues about Chameleon. 

He took to the stage and sang I’m a Rebel Just for Kicks by Dunez and sent the judging panel into a frenzy as they couldn’t work out who was underneath the mask. 

Nevertheless, he failed to impress the studio audience and faced the sing off against Duck. 

Duck, who performed an operatic piece wowed the judges and was sent through to next week, which meant, it was the end of the show for Chameleon.

He was given the five second countdown and when he unveiled his face, it was none other than Justin Hawkins – the English musician, singer and songwriter best known for being the frontman of Darkness. 

Upon the big revelation, Rita Ora, who had been flirting with Chameleon heavily throughout the show’s process said: “You are the best performer!

“You’re so energetic! No wonder you had that presence. This has blown me away, I have no idea what’s happened,” she continued. 

When host, Joel Dommett asked Justin why he wanted to do the show he joked: “I did it to show you guys I’m still alive!” 

But for some of those watching at home, his identity was a complete surprise. 

Taking to Twitter to comment, one said: “Who is he?#TheMaskedsinger,” while another reiterated: “Who? #TheMaskedSinger.” 

Justin Hawkins?! Brilliant!! #themaskedsinger,” a third remarked. 

Someone else wrote: “OMG I am LOVING #TheMaskedSinger ! Chameleon’s unmasking was a complete shock!” 

Wow!! How wrong was I! Chameleon on #themaskedsinger was so not who I was expecting! Absolutely amazing! @JustinHawkins you were phenomenal – just not the sportsman I thought you would be!” One tweet read.

Discussing his role, Justin spoke about how hard it was to keep the secret: “Keeping secrets is challenging, especially when you effectively disappear for the duration of the filming.

“I used a combination of bluffery, bare faced lies and vague muttering to explain my absences. I’m basically James Bond!” 

His overlook caused quite a stir among the panel of experts and he said he “loved” his mask. 

“I thought the lights were a brilliant touch. I was lucky to have the freedom to move my limbs around, but I did feel a little exposed in certain key areas,” Justin added.

He also explained fully why he wanted to be involved in the series: “I wanted to take part in something that would be slightly surreal, and the secrecy made it a very exciting.

“Like having an extra-musical affair. I was reluctant to commit to the recordings because I was supposed to be best man at a wedding in Australia, but it was too good to turn down. Haha!” 

As for what was the toughest part of the process, he said it was “learning relatively modern songs”. It comes as Justin revelled he isn’t “fond of new music” and subsequently had to “force himself to assimilate inferior compositions”. 

The Masked Singer returns tomorrow night at on ITV.
